I've never seen things change so very quickly. I mean, on a dime. Not for everyone, but the vast majority.
Up until about 8 pm last night, whenever halftime was, I think most people felt pretty darn good about the team and season up until that point. Far from perfect, some definite chinks in the armor, but overall, just a better product overall.
And then 20 uninspired, unfocused, undisciplined minutes of basketball pretty much undid any good that was accomplished over the previous four or five weeks. Hey, I'm not blaming anybody for feeling that way, it hit me just as well. Everything up until that point, everything - bruises and all - pretty much fell under the "acceptable/understandable" umbrella.
I don't know what to say. There are so many little things and so many big things that went wrong in that last 20 minutes. Felt like UNR last season. Felt similar to Riverside last weekend, but UCR wasn't talented enough to fully capitalize.
So, are we going to see the trend of years past continue? Or is it going to be halted in its tracks and reversed?
I understand people having faith. I understand people having zero. I really do get both sides of the picture because valid (and invalid) arguments can be made on both sides. Truth is, I can feel something with all my heart and soul and it's not going to make something true. Same goes for Everyone. None of us knows even if we claim to have some strong track record with predicting the future. The only belief that matters is the players and the staff. If either side has no faith in what's trying to be accomplished, we may as well pack up the ball and go home until next November.
I don't know how this team will respond, I really don't. I don't expect to win at UofA, but what I expect doesn't matter. I saw some alarming things from a leadership and toughness aspect last game - hopefully more of an aberration that can be corrected rather than an ugly truth.
We'll soon see what this team is made of very soon. I don't think 20 horrific minutes defines a team any more than a great half does. I think they have what they need but they gotta figure out how to put it together.
But, yes, that was bad. It reminded me of other "rock bottom" times that we've seen under Rice and the coaches before him.
