Keith Whitely had a productive day today as did David Greene. Whitely really shined in the goal line package bulling his way into the end zone a couple times. Greene had a couple really nice runs as well and might be considered the # 1 or # 2 at this point. However Martaveous Holliday really stood out. He is a red shirt freshman that could very well be in the mix come fall. Very impressed with his quickness and speed getting through the line and making cuts. On one particular play he was going off right tackle and was hit extremely hard by someone coming from his left and it knocked him 2-3 feet sideways but he never lost balance or speed. He cut it outside for a nice run.
The most refreshing thing I am seeing is running plays that are designed to the outside. I know, I know. Foreign concept for UNLV football. The ends were doing a nice job providing blocking so the running backs could make their cuts and get downfield. I wonder how much more effective Cornett could have been with his speed if we had running plays designed like that. Or maybe even Bradley Randle.
Another thing I like is the drills that they are putting in that are physical and competitively challenging. One drill was simulating a kick off situation where one player had to keep the other from getting to where the return man would be. There were some good battles going on in that drill. Lots of good tackling drills out there as well. I guess Sanchez watched some of our film from the last couple years and figured out we better learn how to tackle.
In an early thread I stated that the QB job was Decker's but I really like the freshman Thomson. Kid is a good runner and makes good decisions in the option. Had a sweet TD pass to Davis yesterday and maybe had the best day of all the QB's.
All in all at the end of the first half of spring practice the guys are catching on. They are looking like a football team. If you have a chance get out and take in a practice.
