I really liked what he brought to the team last game, the option is deadly with him behind center. It kinda reminded me of when we played UNR during the Kapernick era. Not saying Decker isn't the better option "although his decision making drives me nuts." For the college game I like dual threat qbs, mostly because defenses aren't usually disciplined enough to defend them. If Palandech can develop as a passers I think we have something.

Good comparison. Kapernick was very fast, but had a cannon for an arm too. I'm not sure how Kurt compares in that regard though.

Kapernick almost had a laser beam. Palandech's arm is no where near as accurate or strong. If he becomes more accurate, I think he'll be like a de tuned Russell Wilson, without the cool baseball slide.

I recall Kap not being very accurate in college. I can remember him constantly missing wide open receivers against us... Not like it mattered. He would just run by our defenders on the next play.

Sanchez stated the plan is to use him a few series in the first 3 games of the season then after that it will be a wait and see.

He is a dangerous option when gets out of the pocket. When I saw him in the spring and fall he has a decent arm and made some nice throws. Biggest issue with him in the passing game is trusting himself with his reads. He appeared so afraid to make a mistake he couldnt make the "open" throw either at times. Getting him experience is good not only for this season should be called upon but moving forward.

X2 What Buck said. The other issue Palandech has is getting rid of the ball quickly.

I hope Sanchez continues using him throughout the season for a series or two. The in game snaps are crucial considering he may well be the starter or at least competing next season for the job.

Agree that I'd like to see him get some snaps for a change of pace. However, I'd like for it to be more sporadic, or in short spurts. I thought that after KP got the first down on his drive in the 3rd quarter, it would have been nice to keep NIU on their heels by bringing Blake back in. Instead, we stayed with KP and NIU stuffed 2 runs, and then sacked him on 3rd down. I know hindsight is 20/20, but I'd just prefer that he see the field for 1-4 plays, and then get Decker back in there.

Looking back I agree. I thought it an odd juncture in the game to go with Palandech. That said, I didn't have much issue with it considering his earlier success.

Just not really sold on Decker, his decision making is awful, that penalty he had on the final drive when he threw the ball past the line of scrimmage killed us, he had 10 yards on running room plus the sideline to step out of bounds. He doesn't place the ball on the right shoulder so his receiver can make the caych, and he takes WAY to many risks trying to fit the ball in small pockets. It wouldn't shock me if Palandechs ability to spread the field and run the option gets him the starting job by the end of the years. I'm fine running the triple option and not throwing a lot if it moves the chains.

One thing that's probably not going to change - not at this stage - is that he really only looks at his primary receiver. Only looks for somebody else when he's under duress.

Don't get me wrong Decker has his faults, but had two guys came up with catches in the endzone or Boyd makes the grab to convert that 1st down on final drive everybody would be singing his praises.

Trust me I went to multiple practices, Palandech does not have Decker's accuracy. He also does not have a particularly quick release. For every good throw he made he would miss guys on easy dumps and screens. Not knocking the guy but if we are forced into a situation where we have to throw the ball you want Decker in there at this point.

The offense would become very run heavy with Palandech at QB. I think he will get better with more reps but right now Decker is the better option.

I don't claim to be a college football expert, but I've watched my fair share. Don't MOST college quarterbacks only look to a primary receiver, and move off if needed? I don't expect UNLV to pick up Luck, Manning, or Brees. If we have an accurate quarterback that makes good decisions (usually), I'll take that, and I think we'll be in the same boat as most other CFB teams.

What's wrong with being a run heavy offense? As long as the chains are moving all is good. UNR did pretty good with Kap when the averaged 8 yards a run against us. I'd prefer to be great at 1 thing on offense rather than worrying if everytime we throw the ball it's going to be an INT. Hopefully Decker proves me wrong.

The strength of this team is the receivers offensively. Decker is the only quarterback capable of passing on the team.
Palendech had success on his first series but expect team to look to force him to throw the ball from here out now that they've seen him play.

Nothing wrong with being a run heavy offense at all. But like Will said, the receivers are strength of the team. Decker played a really good game against NIU. He threw for 319 yards 2tds rushed for another 35 yards against 1int I think anybody would takes those numbers on a weekly basis. Think about it we were 2 drops in the endzone away from changing the narrative of that game. That doesn't fall on Decker. Palandech does not have the type of arm that Kap does. He also struggled with accuracy at times during camp. I think he has potential but right now Decker gives us the best chance to win. Decker has his issues no doubt, but the game he played this past Saturday should be viewed as a positive. Now if he puts together a couple of games like he had last year at BYU I could see wanting a change.

I like having Kurt in the game plan. It makes other teams plan for both scenarios. If they don't plan for Kurt, he'll burn them. I'll take an extra 5-10 points per game anywhere we can get it

Same here I like the different dynamic he brings to the offense. I just dont think we are built offensively for him to be succesful the entire game.

I like using Palandech on a couple series. The changed dynamic keeps opponent defenses adjusting. In fact, I wrote in the off-season I wouldn't mind seeing Palandech on the field as a WR at times either. I don't expect to see that happen anytime soon, but it wouldn't be a crazy idea, imo. And if Palandech isn't the starting QB next year I would definitely consider finding reps for him at WR. He's long, fast and athletic. He's a playmaker more as a runner than a passer.

Decker will be good. He played well last week. The O-line and WRs and tight ends had as many (or more) miscues than Decker had. The fact that Decker usually only has time to lock in on one receiver has a lot to do with him not going to 2nd and 3rd option receivers. I agree he forces the ball into too many small windows but he's also pressured more times than not. Decker hung in the pocket nicely when he air-mailed that deep pass to Aaron Criswell in the 4th quarter, and he also hit Boyd right on the money on that final drive 4th down play for what would have been another first down. Boyd has to catch that.

As far as the offense goes, I'm first mostly concerned about fixing the O-line's blocking, getting our receivers to eliminate the dropped balls, developing our young RBs to run and block, and frankly keeping Decker healthy.
