If he gets to the FF or wins a natty while on this contract those bonuses are meager.
I think the same thing when we see the bowl game/major bowl game/playoff bonuses for unlv fb. They should offer guys like a mil for 10-win season, $5mil for a cfb playoff appearance... not as extreme for baskrtball, but they should have ridiculous bonuses on the high end, not cheap bonuses.

have donors stopped donating?
I believe DRF said 2 years ago or 3 years ago that they intended on coaching salaries being paid for out of athletics budget. I know technically the money boosters bring in goes to the budget, but it sounded to me like she didn't want to be being told what to do.

Not sure how that's going for her, but i thought that was what came out at the Otz hiring.

in college athletics the number 2 responibilty of the ad is to manage the donor base in that capacity. athletics are the brand that are driven by donors. deep pockets should have a voice on where the money goes. if 100% of a.ds followed her the coaching carousels would be cut by 75% at least and buyouts wouldnt exist. that wont happen though so she hamstrings her programs with that purist approach.

man i hope he is the guy, does well and gets a huge competitive raise in 2 to 3 years. hope and reality rarely congrue though.

unlv should have the highest paid coach in the mw and top 15 nationally. This is a major brand with huge resources around it. gonzaga should be trying to be unlv not the other way around

I like the Alford type contract. $ 500,000 first two years and then up from there.

Clearly she could of pay over 2 million for a coach with all that buyout money but she figures if I can get this first time coach and he wins I save the school a lot of $ and I look like a genius! I'm really shock that she went with a first time head coach, she said that after they interviewed many candidates that he stood out the most, man I wonder who were these other candidates?

I would love for Kevin Kruger to get it rolling here, he would no doubt stay here for the long term. But I wonder these "other candidates" weren't a better choice? These guys must of had experience winning at other programs so did it come down to just not picking a person that would leave after 4-5years and would not cost you as much? You can't be afraid to hire a guy cause he might leave if wins here, you either promote one of his assistant to keep the winning going or you hire another coach, it is what it is! To me me the stability is not he issue, it's been the bad hires by UNLV!

I hate to say it but the school up north has done it right with there hires all the way back when they hired Trent Johnson! He won there and after 5 years or so he left for a P5 school, then they hire his assistant Mark Fox who all was winning and after 5 years or so he left for a bigger school as well! Then they decided to think outside of the box type of hire, they get a coach that had no college coaching experience but came from the NBA, Mussleman!

And now they hire a "retread" coach (Alford) and he looks like he will get them winning so as well! Do we see the pattern guys, you make hire base on what guy looks like he has the most potential to win and you don't worry "oh no,we can't hire him cause he'll leave us in a few years"! You take a chance on a guy like Kidd (Musselman), Archie Miller(Alford), or one of these guys from these smaller schools that are showing up and winning in the tournament!

Just wondering, why do people feel UNLV is Kruger's dream & that he would make a long term investment to remain the UNLV coach if he has success?

I view him as an Arizona State player that came as a senior transfer specifically to play for his dad who happened to be the coach at UNLV.
His return to UNLV as an assistant seems more tailored towards getting a bigger role on the bench than his dad could provide if he remained at Oklahoma.
His buyout numbers tailored toward the idea that he becomes a bargain pickup for money programs if he has success in either of the final two years of his contract.

Why is it that all these other schools in this conference hire better than us, cause there willing to take some chances and pay the max that they can pay! There not worried about if there going to leave as soon as they win, they deal with it when that comes! As long as you make good hires it works its self out! We're not in a power 5 conference so whenever we get a guy here that wins its very possible he goes and until we join a P5 it is what it is!

All this talk about final fours and national championships under King Kruger..

UNLV I believe pays the most for there coach(well, they have the potential to pay the most but they keep going the cheap route!) Otz was I believe either #1 or 2 it pay (1.1-1.5mill) and read a couple years ago they could pay up to 1.8mill if they wanted to. If you combine that with the buyout money (3.3 mill) and spread it over 5 years that gives you about 2.4 million per! Yet we go well below this and hope you find that diamond in the rough!

And I really do hope that Kruger gets it winning here but if it not we can't keep making these bad hires!

The other schools in the MWC don't have an administration as completely incompetent and worthless as UNLV currently has.

It starts at the top for sure! I was listening to the radio a few days ago and Colfield had Matt Youmans on( he used to cover the Rebels for like a decade I believe) and he said basically the same thing! He said people can't think what they think but UNLV could of had Pitino multiple times already but our administration/AD sucks! He said Pitino sent out his representatives to Vegas back in 2016/17 to see if maybe he might jump to UNLV but was told this school is ran like a "Mickey mouse operation" so he said nevermind! We need a strong good AD that can not only raise money but have the ability to make great hires! There is no excuse for us to not be at the top of this conference on a yearly basis, make the tournament regularly, and from time to time make a run in the tournament! Like that booster who is in charge of the rebel club said, we can handle being behind SDSU, UNR but not Wyoming, Fresno st., CSU! I would say we should be top 3 every year! We have the biggest budget for pay, awesome practice facilities, great arena, and of course our history!

"We have the biggest budget for pay"

Are we sure of this?

Look at what they put Beard through a few years ago. Bunch of people in power with egos the size of hot air balloons. With the right people in charge you can accomplish miracles. With the wrong people in charge you get UNLV athletics.

I think a lot of it has to do with institutional memory. It's been this story since Bayno.

I watch a lot of House Hunters. They tell you the couple has a budget of 1 million but then the first house they go look at is only $600k. So then I assume that thebudget probably isn’t 1 million.

So UNLVs AD with supposedly a $2 million budget looked at $750k coaches?

Otz was making 1.2 and if he made it to year 5 its 1.5 mill per year. They could definitely pay 2 million per year with that 3.3 million buyout money added in there! It's not can they but do they want to! When they went after Cronin a few years ago they had a deal for 2 mill per year but I think 500k per year was going to come from switching from Nike to Under Armor. So at that time they could pay 1.5 mill per year!

I think our last AD really messed us up. To her credit though she was at least trying to get a name coach to come here but the problem was she just totally sucked and couldn't get it done. I remember hearing her coming on the radio during the coaching search and I couldn't believe all the info she was disclosing about the search. I knew then we were in trouble with her in charge of hiring even though I did like that she was trying to get a good name coach here. It just seems since Livengood we haven't had a good AD, he wasn't perfect but he's the closest we've gotten to having a strong AD!
