Gotta admit, I’m a bit intrigued by Kidd. Risky? Absolutely. But he’s been paying his due in the NBA coaching ranks and seems to get positive reviews for his work. No HC experience, especially college, is an obvious concern, but my sense is that he could recruit at a high level — storied college career, NBA chops with a ring. Knows the NBA very well and could help kids navigate the path from college to the NBA. I suspect Kidd would also have deep west coast ties from his HS days thru college and the NBA. Plus UNLV sorely needs a hire with high name recognition to get us back on the map in the men’s college basketball world and with our fans. Moreover, he’s the type of “name” that plays better at a school like UNLV where it’s competing in a very tough sports and entertainment market. He’s obviously got risks, but if we can’t land a name coach with solid HC experience, Kidd may be a much better gamble than any up and coming mid-major coach or high-level assistant coach. I’m not at all 100% sold, but I would definitely bring him in for an interview and see if he blows my socks off.
