I think he could see the writing on the wall that he had very little chance of being anything more than a backup next season!

Understandable. It's a bummer as I think a lot of us had high hopes for him. That first game last year was a debacle though, and I think it had to have messed with his mind quite a bit. He actually looked much better at the end of the season when he filled in. Best of luck to him wherever he ends up.

He definitely looked better at the end of the season, but he really was the solid #3 last season. Now you add in Bailey and Maivaia? Forget about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if we lose another QB to transfer before next season.

The injury in HS derailed what could have been a nice career..

The bummer is that it's almost certainly Brumfield or Friel. I thought at times both showed poise and ability. Neither was done any favors by OL play, but if we are at the point that one of those guys is a distant third or maybe fourth on the depth chart, I feel good about QB play.

If the freshman of the year for the MWC is your 2nd/3rd string QB...

Your depth is pretty solid..

I hope not. I really like Brum when he was healthy, and it seems like Friel has some good skills too, despite being thrown into the deep end with very little experience.

I will say this, Arroyo is continuing to offer HS QBs. We know Rogers is gone. I think Brumfield is gone. The last week had to sting a bit for him. I hope this isn't true because I really loved his game. If Brumfield comes back Friel is going to be starting this fall...just not at UNLV.

he should play TE. Has a perfect frame. Put on 20-30 pounds of muscle and he could MAYBE frind a career doing that. No way at QB. The way he runs the field is nice.

Why is Brumfield leaving. he has so much potential if he stays?

he’ll get plenty of Playing time this season..

Its possible...

I can't find anywhere that he has entered the portal yet..

Coaches are always going to go get the best players they can..

The fact Arroyo went out and got a P5 QB that was very highly rated could say a lot of things.

He simply wanted to add talent, depth and competition to the room..

Or

He wasn't comfortable with what he had.

Doug when healthy flashesd and showed a lot of potential. But his inability to stay healthy (that might sound unfair it's not like he tried to get hurt) was probably a little worrisome..

As late as on the 23rd of this month Doug Brumfield had a happy birthday post for coach Arroyo! I have seen nothing but positive from him for UNLV, so find it very unlikely that he is leaving at this point!

It could still happen, but it's getting late in the process...

And this isn't a knock on him or his ability. I would have been totally fine if he was the defacto #1 heading into the season.

But..

Where would he go and immediately be the unquestioned starter?

I want people who want to fight for their spot. If competing for your spot scares you then you shouldn't be starting at QB anyway.

Joe Burrow would like to have a word...

I get the premise..

But a lot more comes into play.

Coaching change.
Wants to win..
Personal reasons.
Wants to be closer to home.

Take Jacoby...

If UNLV is 9-3 or 10-2 does he bolt? Maybe.

I think it's more likely with increased visibility of a bowl game might he stick around.

It's hard on fans when a team struggles, even worse for players...

Agree. I think alot of kids will go portal after their respective spring practices.

Don't quote me, but I think Armani went through Spring with Arroyo and then transferred to Ohio..

Recruiting is so much different.

You still want to have HS guys be your base, but you want to hold some scholarships in reserve for after bowl season when the portal fills up.

The trick will be to layer recruiting in a way that you don't get caught with heavy graduation in one year at one or two position groups.
