Honest question: Decker came in here after putting up video game numbers in JC. What is it that makes Stanton different (other than durability, it's hoped!)?

It's a legit question and certainly you expect an adjustment from JC to FBS level.

In all honesty, though... Even if Stanton came in here and produced at Decker levels I'd be OK with that. If Decker was healthy all season, I don't see any way the team doesn't get AT LEAST 5 wins (SJSU and FSU, at least... and with motivation, we likely have a better outcome in SDSU/WYO games).

With that said, I expect him to be better than Decker, but even if not, just be a healthy Decker and we're alright.

Decker was lightly, regarded coming out of HS. Stanton was a 4* recruit. Decker put up video game numbers at his JC. The guy that followed him at the same JC put up nearly the same type numbers before going to Idaho State and struggling. So it looks like that system is very QB friendly.

Decker walked on at BYU, where Stanton had multiple P5 offers.

Stanton did suffer a knee injury in HS but has been healthy ever since.

Stanton physically looks the part at 6'2 230.

None of this ensures Stanton turning the program around obviously. But considering that after posting crazy numbers in JC there wasn't a lot of buzz around Decker.

To be honest I think Stanton coming to UNLV has been in the works for a long time and Lagow not Stanton was the back up plan.

Also Stanton is already familiar with some of the terminology in our offense because of his previous time with Cotton.

I think there are fewer question marks surrounding Stanton, like overall arm strength and throwing mechanics.

In Deckers defense DeVante Davis missed a ton of time last year which hurt the passing game. Decker was hurt most of this year. If he was healthy we may have been a 5 or 6 win team this year.

At least on paper Stanton looks the part. Hopefully, and I think he will be very good for us the next 2 years.

Thanks for all that. With that Cotton connection he should ramp up faster, for sure. I like his size: he should be able to stand up better to a beating but, hopefully, he won't have to! Throw in a little bit of "IT" and, okay, I'm on board (as if I wasn't already!).

The other thing that is good is I believe we are still in the mix for Armani Rogers.

I think had Decker been healthy he would have had a solid season overall and we might have even been bowl eligible in Sanchez' first year. Decker played hurt all season but still looked pretty good in games against Boise, CSU, etc. (before going down again with more injury).

I love that Sanchez is hitting the JC ranks hard. JRob did the same thing when he first arrived and loaded up on some studs. Nate Turner, Scott Parkhurst, Anton Palepoi, Jeremi Rudolph, Ray Cheetany, and several other key guys.

There might still be some JC guys added but if they are it will be most likely be during National signing day as they may not have been mid-year qualifiers.

So this leaves roughly 7 spots left for this class?

DL is the biggest need, Edge pass rushers to be more specific.

OL should be improved with Polu coming off of a RS, Neale, Jacobson gaining some experience as true freshman and the addition of Chevalier. Kreitler and Saxelid return as well after solid years. I wouldn't mind one more JC to fill in here to go along with the young guys that will be arriving in the summer, Outlaw, Garcia, Caldwell and Brayton.

It will be interesting to see the roster in the spring and if there are any further position moves.

Nice looking class so far. I do not see this team gassing in the 4th or getting run over. To my eye, we look more talented than in years. I would guess that Strength & conditioning will be brutal this off season. I am hoping that TS has a few Christmas presents for us still....

This may not be it for JC guys either, only the early/spring qualifiers.

Studs on the DL that can make an immediate impact and pressure would be a nice Christmas present! Then the rest in Stud HS guys....Now and the future.

In addition to what has already been said, I'll add that
1] Stanton is twice the athlete
2] Stanton is a far superior runner
3] Stanton's arm is twice as strong

If Johnny can stay at the same level of accuracy as he demonstrated at Saddleback, or actually improve upon it, then the sky is the limit.

"If it’s anyone’s fault I didn’t have success there, it’s mine." That was a quote from Stanton about Nebraska.

Love that he's humble! Can't wait for him to actually sign. Seems crazy to think that we're getting this type of transfer now since I can't remember players of his ilk (along with the other JC guys coming here) being guys we get.

My son is currently a member of the USC Trojans and was a teammate in high school with Johnny Stanton. Johnny comes from an outstanding family and is a terrific young man. He is a proven winner and perfect for the offense Sanchez runs. Johnny is very accurate on short to intermediate passes, but is a better runner. He is built like a linebacker and will flat out run over people.

I never thought Nebraska was a good fit for him. He nearly went to Wisconsin which I thought was a better system for him. I remember one practice where the Nevada coaches chatted up his dad and the pistol offense. John Sr. wasn't familiar with their program, but I thoguht Johnny would be terrific in it.

As I recall, Riley offered him at Oregon State, but only as an athlete. When he came to Nebraska, I wasn't surprised to learn that Johnny transferred. My son went to one of the saddleback games amd Johnny didn't disappoint. You're going to win a lot of games with Johnny and Sanchez.

Good luck.

Thank you and good luck to your son. I'm not a big USC fan despite having attended there but I'm hoping your son finds a lot of success in college and, God willing, the NFL.

Great insight, thank you.

Great insight, indeed.

But it's UNR. :)

@SoCalFan you had the name right, but UNLV fans won't give UNR the pleasure of calling them "Nevada". They are Nevada-Reno, UNR, or Reno, in these parts.

Only the athletic department at the Community College of Northern Nevada uses the name Nevada. In regards to calling them Nevada, most of the states population and boards of regents will disagree.

No offense intended. Thank you for clarifying. Now for the good news - Johnny is going to kill it. Congrats.

@SoCalFan UNLV regards UNR (Nevada) the way USC regards the school in Westwood with the baby blue stuffed bear. We don't play a song about them even when we aren't playing them (the one with the refrain "U-C-L-A Sucks!") but we don't use terms of endearment when discussing them.
