Ya, not huge fan myself of Philyaw, though I will say that defensive player stats can be misleading. Richard Sherman, for example only had 8 pass breakups all year (he did have 4 ints though) because nobody threw at him. Obviously not comparing Philyaw to arguably the best CB in the NFL, but IF Philyaw was hands down the best corner on his team, opposing teams may have thrown away from him. A better indicator (which we really aren't afforded the opportunity to see ourselves) would be to look at game tape and see how many times he's beaten by the receiver he's covering regardless of whether the ball is thrown at him or not. Another thing to consider is what type of scheme fit the staff believe he is. If, for example, he played in a press man scheme (ala the Seahawks) and played poorly, it may not matter if the staff were to plan on using a "Tampa 2" zone scheme where he may be seen as an ideal fit where CBs can be a little less athletic but are needed for some run support.
That being said, if Philyaw was talent/scheme fit, I believe the staff would have found room for him. It appears as though the staff wants one JC DB and really prefers to see what Myles does first. I was just wondering if Myles chooses Baylor, does that mean the staff takes what they feel is a "need" in Philyaw (JC DB) or do they invest that scholarship in High school player? Really depends on how much they feel Philyaw could contribute the next 2 years.
