Is Steve Lavin a true candidate?

I have seen Coach Lavin's name brought up in the RJ and the Sun but does anyone know for sure if hes been contacted by UNLV? Does UNLV have any true interest in him or is this just another Reggie Theus pipe dream. Of all the candidates been named he makes the most sense for us. Experienced coach, winning coach, great recruiter, can win games in the NCAA tournament, can prepare players for the NBA. In addition he's a household name with his time at UCLA and St.Johns and doing his coverage on TV. Of al the coaches hes got the biggest name and in my opinion could eventually lead us to the Final Four. I cant say that about the others. Plus I think he could talk Augmon into staying on. So my question is does anyone know for sure if hes been contacted about an interview?

I don't get it either, after looking at the other names floating around he's gotta be our guy. It was nuts to offer Cronin ahead of him. And NEWSFLASH: He actually wants to be here unlike the Irish Leprechaun.

I don't care what anybody says, 5 straight years of going to the second weekend of the tourney is hardly underachieving, that's ridiculous especially when these people claim UNLV was wrong to let Kruger go for the very same reason, and Kruger only got out of the first weekend once in 7 years.

Would you rather be sitting here pissed because our loaded Rebel team was bounced at the 16 and calling Lavin an underachiever or crying over one and dones and NITs? And I don't wanna hear St John's, ST Johns....His recruiting at UNLV would be light years ahead of St Johns and his record there was far from bad especially considering the state it was when he got there. His first turnaround was the 3rd best in Big East history.

Steve Lavin would be my choice.

Lav would own the MW and would NOT require the 3-4 year "rebuild", which everyone seemed to think was going to be necessary for a guy like little Micky. F a rebuild. Give us Lavin and let's compete next year.

Lavin has experience winning at a big program, and in two big conferences. He could recruit like a champ locally and nationally and he's young enough to stay for a long time. He's coached under legends, has TV cashe, and by any reasonable estimation is a better in game coach today than he was during his first run at UCLA. Guy is a cancer survivor who took a year off, then returned to lead his program back to the tournament, improving their record each year.

The pressure and scrutiny he'd receive here wouldn't scare him at all. I have no idea if he's a realistic candidate or not, but I hope he is. The name may not have excited me on day one, but I think he'd be great.

Westgate do you have any insider information on why Lavin isn't a candidate?

In 11 seasons Lavin has been to the tourney 8 times with 5 Sweet 16s and 1 Elite 8...if any coach in the last 11 years would have done something like that at UNLV we would be in all our glory, but to some on this board he don't deserve a shot but a guy that has 1 year head coaching at division 1 should be our guy. Proof is in the pudding, Lavin is a proven winner and will lead this team back

It's weird though that he isn't mentioned for but one job opening. There has to be something with that. I can't wait till they hire someone and then try and expalain that this is the one person they wanted all along

Well he just liked my tweet, so I guess you can say things are getting pretty serious.

Boy at this time he has to be the choice over Eustachey! He at least fits the personality for Vegas. I am at a complete loss to comprehend this calamitous failure by the admin to get this done properly. Regardless of how you feel about Rice there is no way he should have been fired in the middle of the season. This is haunting us now. Time for TKM to step down and let someone else get it done. If he isn't in play then elevate Augmon and Miller geez!

Also I can only imagine how this has played out for coaches around the country where a Booster can get a coach fired in the middle of the season. It's like we're diseased now.

Lavin would have us competing for a MW title next year. Zero chance the job is too big for him.

Go get him Tina, there's still time.

Are you his agent! I have never seen so many posts, from the same person, saying the same thing! Lavin is not being considered! Sorry!!

I would love to know why he isn't a candidate. I think tomorrow UNLV will hire Beard and some will be happy. I wont be one of them. I am glad Rice is gone. Replacing him with a coach whos name is only considered a big name because of what he did in one year at ALR is mind boggling. No history as a head coach playing top notch teams. No history of recruiting. His offense will put Rebel fans to sleep and in two years we will all be calling for another change. Lavin is the Reggie Theus of this UNLV coaching search. Obviously somebody doesn't want him.
