I am sold.

I agree that he did a great job at the press conference and made me hopeful.

The negatives of no wins versus top 25 teams and no wins in the tourney still make me doubtful. Hopefully with the facilities, UNLV name and school, and new assistants he will get/have better players that can get him over those walls.

I just looked up Las Cruces.....why do they even have a college....

Playing in the WAC your not going to get a lot of chances to play top 25 schools and winning that league got them 4 #13 seeds and a #15 their last 5 tournament appearances.

2009 -2010 Lost to Michigan State in 1st round by 3. 0 top 25 schools on schedule
2012-2013 Played and loss to a ranked New Mexico twice. Lost to Saint Louis 1st round
2013-2014 Blown out at # 19 Zags and #1 Arizona. Lost in 1st round to SDSU in OT
2014-2015 Blown out at #11 Wichita State and Home 1 point OT loss to #24 CSU, lost to Kansas in 1st round

Its Friday and looking this up was better than working.

Ever heard of Corvallis, Oregon or Spokane, Washington. They both house Pac-12 school. Nothing wrong with Las Cruses.

I remember a Tark's UNLV teams getting blown out in the 1st round many times. Iowa and Princeton losses were brutal.

My comment about Las Cruces is aimed more at complimenting Menzies with what he was able to do in such a small dirt college town.

I think you may be a little confused ------------ Tark's Rebel teams never lost a first round game in the NCAA's. They did loose to NC State (the year the NC State under Valvano won the NC) in 1983 by a score of 71 - 70 (this was in UNLV's 1st game of the Tournament but they had received a bye for the first round). This was the only year in which a Tarkanian coached UNLV team was winless when participating in the tournament. UNLV under Tark did play Princeton one time in the tournament (1984 --- UNLV won the game 68 - 56). UNLV under Tark did play Iowa twice in the tournament ( 1987 --- UNLV won 84 - 81, and 1988 Iowa won 104 - 86)

I like Menzies and think he will surprise us next year. Remember he still has the two commits and Carlos might get recruited back. International, JUCO and Transfers. He will put together a good team. All the nay-sayers might get muzzled. Someone with that personality gets along with people. Leaders like him are not common. So glad Beard went to Texasses Tech. What a nightmare he would have been. All the resources he has here as compared to NMSU must be a breath of fresh air for him. He will be the first coach to win a MWC Regular season title at UNLV. that is what he has done, won conference titles. He has a great personality and I WILL SUPPORT HIM. Go REBELS and GO MARVIN. I really like him.

What PAC 12 team is in Spokane?

I also like Menzies personally, and am happy for him for finally getting himself out of that dump Las Cruces after nearly a decade, and getting this opportunity. That's a great story. Also glad we have a guy like him instead of someone like Beard. Personality-wise, he'll be an easier guy to root for.

I'm not "sold".

His record vs. the "big boys" is still the same as the day he was hired, before we all started talking ourselves into him, while we were all still shocked at the disappointing hire.

However, I also have hope. Mediocre Marv does have a chance to take a big step up here. Like some have pointed out, several of his big-game losses have been very close. And the fact that he's got a lot more resources, etc.

It will be interesting to see how this works out....

i should've clarified what i meant. i'm not sold that he will will be a winner. i am sold that he will bust his ass trying to really make it work here and that he wants to be here.

the hilljack Bird, sounded like a used car salesman to me (Kurt Russel - Used Cars 1980) and i thought he was full of sh*t, but i guess he had me fooled a bit, because i didn't think he was that full of it.

it's weird for me because although Menzies was far down the list, Bird & the Leprechaun were way further.

By all rights we should be sitting here dissecting Howland's first year at the helm, but instead, here we go again with another unproven coach, That's what incompetent administration does for ya!

I think part of the problem some fans have with him is the lack of a huge upside.

I don't see any reason why he won't have us right back to where Kruger had us in a few years.

Regular NCAA tourney appearances, competing for conference championship, etc.

Most of us are still waiting for that guy that can take us all of the way back to the top, and since there is no reason to believe Menzies will do that, people are disappointed.

I do believe he will at least get us back to being competitive in conference, I just don't see any final fours in our future.

To add to that Jerry coached in 17 defined NCAA tournament first games at Long Beach State, UNLV and Fresno State going 16-1. Only loss was in 2000 to a Wisconsin team which would go on to play in the Final Four. Not too shabby.

Ernie, was Beard full of sh!t about Coach Tark?

Sure never heard the story from Jerry. As a matter of fact don’t ever recall him mentioning Chris Beard’s name.

Timing of the story doesn’t add up. Jerry did little traveling for recruiting while at Fresno State, particularly his last few years. He would travel to attend the big AAU events like ABCD in New Jersey, and to recruits homes to seal the deal if necessary, but that was basically it.

The idea that he and Danny would travel to a junior college to woo a player who wasn’t seriously considering them is extremely hard to believe.

Given Beard didn’t name the player is telling. I have a pretty good recollection of most of the players they were going after and do not recall any serious consideration for one from either of the JC programs he coached at.
