Marshall is a good team. They were 9-4 last year, including a 38-20 win over USF in the Gasparilla Bowl (one of my favorite bowl names!), and returned just about everybody. They opened this year against an overmatched VMI, so they could afford to look ahead to the Broncos. BSU's first week has been well documented.
BSU has an interesting mix going into this season. They only have one defensive coach on staff who was in the same position last year. The others are either in different positions or new to the team, including DC Schmedding. That said, the defense has shown the ability to adjust (dominant second halves in both games). It is a pretty experienced group, with CB Walker and LB Noa the outliers.
Everyone knows about true frosh QB Bachmeier, but RB Holani - also a true freshman - was the first rusher since 2017 to break 100yds vs Marshall. Their leading receiver in that game was true soph Shakir. Their WR group is deep and talented. The OL is a strength, with all starters back from last year. They are struggling in the red zone, plagued by turnovers/mistakes and having to settle for FG's.
Their kicker was 5-5 vs FSU, but 0-1 vs Marshall. Their punter is inconsistent, having shanked a couple so far.
What does all this mean? It means that they have some cleaning up to do. They are fortunate to be 2-0, but they're only going to get better as chemistry improves. This weekend vs Portland St should be a blowout. If it isn't then their problems run deeper.
