This article is about UConn's crazy bad defense and how it compares to some of the all-time worst defenses in CFB history. This is where UNLV comes in with, maybe, the worst D since the Division I split.

As we know all too well, awful defense is nothing new to the Rebels. The question is, why? Is it talent, and not enough of it? Is it lack of top-flight training facilities (or lockers!)? S&C? Coaching/lack of player development? Players who seem to forget the fundamentals that made them good prospects in the first place? The pantheon of presidents who didn't care enough? Charlie Cavagnaro's ghost? It boggles the mind.

Sanchez talked about lack of depth....

Yeah, that's what happens when you have a class of 27 in year 2. Only 10 on defense. And of those 10 only 2 are left on team. One has dealt with numerous injuries. The other has yet to contribute.

That is a whiff on an entire class. That class should be forming the backbone of your defense in year 4...

Does Sanchez need to go JC route to replace that class?

He went heavy JC on the D-Line this year and none of them have contributed much.

If they had landed PJ (went to Arizona) things might be different.

To answer your question though. Probably, I don't see how else he can. You typically can't expect true freshman to contribute all that much.

There are a couple freshmen they have red shirt this year they like.

They lose Alo-Wily DT, Laolagi LB, Kalili CB, Baker SF. (I'm sure there are others those off top of my head. All starters).

I'm baffled by the results this year. The defense held up vs USC for 3 1/2 quarters. Defense was good vs Arkansas State as well.

Conference play started and everything went south. And not a little south, a lot south.

One thing I do like. Tim Skipper has been more aggressive. Shows a lot more different looks. Maybe with 'his guys' things will turn around.

Downside, that probably means another year before defense is respectable.

Hope I'm wrong.

I agree on personnel. But there were three new coaches added to staff including the DC...

It just means there is less research to do. If you are familiar with the personnel, you can quickly figure out what the coaches are doing with em.

True, but schematically the defense is different. Guys have moved around. Being used differently than last year. Different blitz packages/looks.

There were no tendencies for teams to research with Skipper. 4 games isn't a lot of film.

I think the bigger issue is not enough overall talent.

We have blitz packages?

11 sacks all of last year. DT Mike Hughes was tied for the lead with 2.

At 20 this year with one game left. Mann and McCoy both at 4.

Twenty is still way to low.

They're bringing pressure, guys just aren't getting there enough.

They're playing a different front from last as well.

They've missed on a number of guys at DE/OLB they thought would help with the pass rush.

While I do respect what Tim Skipper is trying to do on defense, the defensive stats have to be taken with a grain of salt.

Sack stats are hard to find. I've seen the 20 total but I've also seen 21 and that looks to be the correct number if you total the games. 11 of those 21 sacks were in the first four games, which now look to be one of UNLV's weakest non-conference schedules ever.

In the 7 conference games the Rebels have only 10 sacks, and 3 of those were Outsey in the last 4 games (Outsey has 4 total like Mann and McCoy). The Rebels had 0 sacks in their first 3 MWC games and 0 again against Fresno.

So in conference all of UNLV's 10 sacks have come in the SJSU, SDSU, and Hawaii games. The 4 sacks against Hawaii all came in the first half and the starting series of the 2nd half, all before QB McDonald got benched.

Only 11 FBS teams have given up 35 or more sacks this year, and UTEP, Hawaii, and SJSU are 3 of them (UNLV has given up only 30).

This is all correct.

I wasn't making the assertion that the numbers were good. I was responding to 'they have blitz packages?' Yes they do, they're just not good at it.

Simply pointed out they had doubled the total from the year before, and that Skipper was at least trying to bring different looks. He isn't vanilla like Baer was at the end.

If we're really dissecting numbers you can basically throw out the Air Force game because of how little they throw.

Should Sanchez be let go, it will be that 2016 class on defense and the overall play of his defense that will be his undoing.

Win or lose verse unr, UNLV is not going to get rid of Sanchez. They don't have the money, and will give him at least one more year no matter what!

One thing is for certain, you got to give Sanchez credit for sticking with his QB through hell and high water.

Our AD is a puppet with strings attached!
Wow! Pretty good discussion going on in this thread and you throw this into it out of left field. What a great contribution without any supporting facts or arguments. Genius!

Facilities facilities facilities which has already been said which ties the hands of Desiree with no additional funding. So yes in that manner she is a puppet with strings attached.
