Herbstreit's comments concerning U of Miami leading to a coachingchange. Sounds a lot like UNLV's football problem

"To me, you look at the powerhouse programs…the president, AD, head coach. Same vision. They’re aligned in their vision for what needs to happen,” said Herbstreit. “Recruiting. Budget. Staff. Whatever it means. That’s what it takes. Miami doesn’t have that. So I don’t think it matters who the head coach is. Until you get a president and an AD and a coach together on the same page, I guess football doesn’t matter. It matters to the alums, to the brotherhood of The U. But I don’t know if it matters to the people making decisions at Miami. And if they don’t change that, it doesn’t matter who the head coach is.”

He's right but in today's game you also need boosters to make the money flow. NIL is the path forward for any program serious about getting to the top.

Sounds like UNLV’s athletic problem.

Miami paid out some of the largest NIL deals.

Bleacher report did a whole breakdown of the NIL deals and Miami was right up there..

I don't know too much about Miami's situation. I was speaking in generalities about what it will take to elevate a program today. NIL hasn't been a factor until now.

I would love for UNLV to play the NIL game better. Any of the old tark boosters around still lol?

I see the NIL thing as a bit of a loophole that might get closed soon. I don't think anyone envisioned it being a recruiting tool and allowing schools to basically buy players.

No I understood that. I wasn't trying to do a 'gotcha' post. Sorry if it came across that way.

I agree the NIL game will be important. But it has some inherent risks as well. If folks step up, drop big money and get or see poor results, they may become less likely to drop money next time around.

People in that income bracket like to flash cash and feel a part of something. They also tend not to like to light their money on fire either.

I believe they fully understood where it would go but it is a legal issue involving a student athlete owning their own name and likeness. It's not going back. It will go up.

There are boosters at traditional powers in both basketball and football with essentially unlimited (i.e $Billions) money for this. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see multi-million dollar deals. It'll be nothing for a booster to pay $5 -$10 mill a year for a beloved basketball program to stay ahead. And his golf buddy will pay more for his program to catch up. And so on.

This is why in the next few years it will be nearly impossible for us and @ 250 other programs to compete for top talent.

* There are 614 billionaires in the U.S. making at least $100 million annually. A mil each for 13 players on a basketball team is nothing.

Interesting. Texas is already thought to be offering Quin Ewers, transfer from Ohio St, former #1 recruit several million in NIL money to sign. Crazy stuff.

This is what worries me the most. Up to this point 3rd parties have been involved with paying the players, apparently a bill was passed in Texas that allows the school to pay players directly.

That is a game that UNLV has no chance in hell in playing.

Being in a larger market, there is at least some advantage to that, at least in potential. Hopefully UNLV will be able to play the game a bit more withn 3rd party boosters/buisnesses.

I think UNLV should offer free adverstising to NIL donations.

Any program will be able to play the game. The most lowly team can be transformed to a top 10 demon within a couple of years. All the program needs is a dedicated billionaire who isn't afraid to spend the bucks. $5 mil for your coach. $ 1 mil for each assistant. $ 1 mil per starter and $750,000 for the rest. A private plane and a chauffeured limo for the coach. I fully expect a smaller program to explode on the scene with this very scenario. The whole thing for under $20 mil a year. Billionaires spend more than that on their daughters wedding.

Remember - the NBA has a salary cap. There will be no salary cap in the NCA$.
