game talk

Sometimes UNLV just doesn't look like a very well coached team. It seems like Rice has a gameplan for every game, but if that plan doesn't work they have no plan B and just start playing for themselves. When the gameplan works, it usually works great, but when it doesn't, forget it.

It looks like Vaughn is still sick. This team depends on him so much so that really hurts.

But it's true that we hear this every year. It's a new group of players, they're still young, they are getting better, they are talented, blah blah blah. People said that last year and the year before.

Hey Rice!, Keep with the zone and let DW shoot a few threes. Renos big time recruits are too much for this team.

If you're shooting 17% and need to get right...play the rebels, and you'll come out of that slump.

UNR coach should send Rice a check for making him look like a smart coach.

Everyone wants to use excuses. Fact is we are losing to Reno at home by 5 and have 30 points. Coach sucks. Can't even get his players fired up to play their in state rival. Typical slow start. Usual bs just w different day.

Who's great f'n idea with the Floyd Mayweather fathead?

Someone take that sign down

Will rice get his head out of his ass and bench Kendrick. He sucks. He thinks he is Jordan. He is a detriment to this team. He adds nothing. Get rid of him. Damn rice is stupid.

Sick of Rice.

We're soft. We're inconsistent. We don't hustle.
Reno is mediocre at best.

I've been saying this since day one. But I have been wrong the entire time and everyone else has been right and love Dave and he is the best coach. He is garbage, this team is garbage, and all in a conference that sucks ass according to Reagan. We can't even beat Reno. Good job everyone on your predictions that we will win by double digits. We will lose this game to RENO AT HOME TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!!!

Reno is acting like they won a championship or something. You know they suck when they show that much joy after beating us.

Sarcastically speaking of course.

reno did exactly what they wanted to do. Slow the game down. Slow ball, and the 'runnin' rebs were back to walking it up again.

Count how many fast break points there were. I'll wait.

This team is in trouble. At this point, they are headed for a 2nd straight season without UNLV in either the NIT or NCAA Tournament. This team has alot of talent, but they do not play together as a TEAM. They also make alot of little mistakes that result in losses against a so-so team like Nevada when said team is having a good game, and against the good teams when those teams are playing near or above their potential. Way too many little mistakes for game #15. And, the young team excuse is getting old. Yes, this is a young team, and it has several 4 and 5 star recruits. More than one player whom some were saying may leave after this season for the NBA. And, we are now at the mid-point of the season, yet it is hard to tell that by the play of the team on the court. We are also half way through year 4 of the Dave Rice era. And, we are seeing many of the same issues that plagued UNLV in seasons 1,2 and 3, especially last season. All of the guys that play in the games are players recruited by Rice. What good are 4 and 5 star recruits, if not able to win enough games to get to the NIT, let alone the NCAA Tournament?

The next to last possession on which Vaughn went one-on-one is a perfect example of why this team will struggle to win more than 9-10 games in the MWC. It was evident once he got the ball, he was going to try and make a play on his own. Had the shot gone in, alot of people would have been saying "what a great move". But, he got a contested shot and was not squared up to the basket. Now, compare this with the possession on which Vaughn hit a 3 point shot to give UNLV a short lived 62-60 lead. He came off a screen, was able to square up and make a HUGE shot. Unfortunately, UNLV did not do a good job on defense, a player for UNR got an open look at a 3, and made the shot to give UNR the lead. I'm NOT putting the blame on Vaughn. Just using these 2 examples of times where UNLV got and made a shot within the confines of the offense, and missed when trying to make a hero play and going 1 on 5.

I can recall another possession on which McCaw took a quick 3 point shot. His strength offensively is going to the basket, not shooting the 3. I could be wrong, but I believe this happened with around 5 minutes left in the game, and UNLV up by 5. He went for the home-run, and whiffed. That is a lack of understanding of the time and situation in the game, and also not playing to the players strength. Part of the blame lies with McCaw, but part of the blame also lies on the coaching staff, who does not seem to have gotten the point across to McCaw that he is not a good 3 point shooter. In my opinion, McCaw ought to have been taken out after that shot. Not to be yelled at, but to have it explained to him why that was a bad shot. Remind him what his strengths are on offense, and then get him back in the game. Would not even be a bad idea to have a no 3pt shot rule for McCaw. He takes a 3, he is coming out of the game, even if the shot goes in. Give him freedom to go to the basket and use his athleticism, just make it clear to him that his role on this team is NOT shooting 3pt shots.

When UNLV went up by 6 with 7+ minutes to play, I figured they might end up winning by 10 or more points. They had the momentum, the crowd was into the game, and that is a time when one would think playing teams like Kansas, Arizona, Utah, Stanford, Temple and ASU would be a positive for UNLV. And, considering the lead stayed in the 4-6 point range for at least 3 minutes, and with UNLV playing at home, I thought this team would be able to keep UNR at bay. Instead, to UNR for the 3rd time in a row, 2nd in a row at home. UNR came into this game 1-5 against teams in the Top 200 of the RPI, and 0-3 on the road. They were also 0-3 at neutral sites, so that is 0-6 away from Reno.

Lack of bench production is killing this team. UNR outscored the Rebs 25-9 in points of the bench. They were able to rotate their inside players and always have fresh players at the 4 and 5 positions. UNR also outscored UNLV 19-11 on 2nd chance points. Other than those areas, the teams were close to identical stat wise.

UNLV has an excellent point guard, who is a pass first, shoot second type of player. Yet, they are ranked 154th in assists. The team has a great deal of talented offensive players, yet UNLV ranks 164th in scoring at just over 68 points per game. UNLV is 146th in points allowed, at 64.3

On a positive note, the team was excellent at the foul line. 15-16...Vaughn was 7-7, made some key free throws down the stretch and scored 20 pts. C. Wood had another double-double with 17pts and 13 rebounds. Doolin played a solid game.. 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and only 1 TO. Also played hard as always.

I'm sure rebelluver will come up with all kinds of reasons why "coach" rice is great even though we just lost to a pathetic 5-8 team on our home court and the team wasn't ready to play and looked clueless on how to do what a 5th grader knows how to do like box out.

Mccaw can shoot so he needs to keep shooting it and needs to start shooting the pull up jumper. He caught the ball in the middle of the zone a dozen times and if he would've just looked at the basket he would have had wide open jumpers from 12-15 feet but he kept passing to the corner. Not one of our 14 coaches in suits saw that and told him.

Doolin is a disappointment. He may be better if our offense was better. He is just put in bad situations and places on the floor the same as every other player. Our "coach" lets the other team dictate how we play and what style in our place no less. We should be the ones dictating tempo by using pressing trapping etc. We are not a half court team. They just stand there and look stupid. It is embarrassing. With all the players we have and IF our coach would figure out we are better in transition then we should be scoring 80 a game and top 25 in all offensive categories. Also we can't get out to run if we can't box out and get a rebound. Reno had 22 OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS!!!! Seriously? That is something taught in the 1st grade. Maybe Dave should go back and start coaching some basics. The AZ win was just a fluke and all this team is doing is regressing. But it is ok we are improving according to everyone after 2 losses and that was before we lost to Reno on our home floor. We must really be improving now.

I agree with you that McCaw can shoot and score. He is just not effective from 3 point range. But, 15-18 feet, he ought to be encouraged to shoot, and he has the potential to score 13-15 ppg, and on a good night/day 20 or more. Also, shooting from that range and going to the basket more will lead to more FT's for McCaw. He also can be highly effective going to the basket, provided he is not trying to go 1 on 5 or 1 on 3.

As far as Doolin, he is a pass first, shoot second PG. He plays solid defense. He get's on the floor for loose balls. He does not turn the ball over much. Unfortunately, the team as a whole is not making shots, and alot of times they are not taking good shots. And, that limits the overall effectiveness of Doolin on this team. I understand the players play the game, but part of the blame for this lies with the coaching staff. There is something wrong with the offense if players are not getting in position often enough to play to their strengths, and/or when there are too many possessions with guys going 1 on 5, or taking quick shots when said shots are not quality shots for said player..

Also, why not try some players off the bench who have played little to not at all so far this season? There is not enough production off the bench, especially scoring wise for UNLV to win if 2 or more starters have off games scoring wise. What is there to lose by trying some new guys in games? This is a D1 team in a Top 10-11 conference. A team many people felt had a chance to finish in the top 3 of the MWC and advance to the NCAA Tournament. I find it hard to believe there are only 8 players on the roster good enough to play. And, if only 8 of the players are good enough to play, that does not say much for the great recruiting of Rice. UNLV got worn down by the bench of UNR, so what is going to happen against SDSU, CSU, Boise, New Mexico, Wyoming at home, and pretty much every road game?

i agree with some stuff, but at one point, McCaw was our best 3 % (other than Walker & Cheaney). he's in a bit of a slump shooting it right now. you really think he can match Wood's output in points? i guess if he shoots enough.

let me know the last time Doolin ever kept any guard from penetrating. not just Doolin, all of our guards. we cannot stop opposing guards from penetrating leading to GO or CW attempting to block and if they don't, it's an offensive board by their man they left to help on our hapless guard defense. how you help that is going zone, but as soon as the other team hits 1 shot against the zone we are back in man.

Positive note, has been the only scratch your head loss for our freshmen team this season. It's just sad that it came at this point
