Looks like our d-line coach, Joe Seumalo, was hired to the same position at ASU. Hopefully Tony can find a qualified replacement.

Yeah I thought something was up when his twitter page was devoid of anything UNLV for the last few weeks. I am sure Tony has known about this a lot longer than anyone else and has someone solid lined up.

Very curious to see who the next D Line coach is. With only a few weeks until Spring Ball they will be getting someone in place pretty quick.

This is a big reason why UNLV will need to quickly upgrade facilities, financing, etc for the program. As UNLV starts to show more and more improvement, expect the big programs to come poaching the coaching staff. I just hope Sanchez stays a long time, and that he can keep the majority of the staff intact.

P.S. Not sure what you mean by his not being on his twitter page? He has only posted about 3 times in the last year from what I have seen, so he really never was on his page, or does he have a different page?

I meant he changed his BIO reading UNLV DL Coach and took down his background picture of UNLV. Page now shows as Blank. While he didnt post, he did actively follow recruits current players.

Yup we need a billion dollar practice facility to pay for our coaches..

Explain that?

Damn it. I thought he was a good part of staff.

This one hurts a bit. DL play has been an issue for UNLV for years. I thought with some of the redshirts and transfers (Dedashtian and Singer) Hughes, Fao, Alo-Wily with another year in the system we might see this unit round into form. Continuity is nearly as important for the DL as it is the Oline.

Really interested to see who Tony is has lined up for the spot.

It's a compliment of sorts that we did lose a position coach to a P5 program. Speaks highly of who Sanchez brought with him.

He was considered a big link to Hawaii recruiting. Could be a reason we didn't land anybody from the Islands this year after being really active there last year.

He was a pretty well known commodity in the Pac12 as a position coach and recruiter. Not surprising teams with a need there came looking.

Improved facilities help recruiting. Better players equal more wins. More wins equal more fans. More fans equal more revenue. More revenue equals more pay for coaches.

Also the improved facilities/stadium are a must to get P5 entrance. A move to a P5 conference will result in a share of TV deals that pay a lot more than what we currently are receiving. That in turn allows us to pay coaches more.

I think he was talking big picture.

Thanks Bullmastiff.

It is the overall picture. Even just being able to sell out the stadium would allow them to increase salaries by at least double. How long would it take for UNLV to get into either the PAC12 or Big12 with a program that goes to bowl games and wins most of their games. We need to follow the steps of Houston which has become very competitive in recruiting with the big boys, and they finished the season ranked as one of the best teams in the country. How long before Houston ends up in the Big12?

Sanchez will stay as long as he isn't offered by an SEC school or USC/UCLA or somebody in that ballpark.

Hate to lose this one but, then again, it's not like there's another Phenicie on the staff that I'd like to see depart. Joe is a pretty likable guy, though, in addition to being a good coach.

As inferred above, I don't think this was any big surprise to CTS. I think it gets filled pretty quickly.

Anyone have any sort of clue who Sanchez might bring on? I can only expect them to be better than Joe was.

I think Joe was pretty good. I'm hoping for someone equal or better. But he was a very good value for UNLV. He had a very strong level experience and connection to the islands. Bummer to lose this strong a connection to Hawaii.

On the positive side, I think we will have some strong choices for CTS showing that UNLV is going to be much more exciting in the future. So...not sure what who comes aboard but I'm confident it will be a good coach, up and coming or looking for change of pace.

Joe is actually a very well respected defensive line coach. I think he did the best he could with what he had last year. Really up until about the midway point the defensive line was holding its own. I think lack of quality depth and talent hurt a lot. I think with Singer and Dedashtian this year we will be in better shape in that regard. I think Hughes was forced to play to many snaps last year.

The search should be interesting. I could be wrong, but my guess is Coach Sanchez has known this was coming for some time and has been searching for the replacement.

Considering our still tenous money situation, he is probably looking at guys from staffs that were recently replaced or possibly a lower level assistant from a big school?

@willlevi might know if there a current local High School head coach, who he thinks may be interested/qualified in breaking into the college game. I think thats a long shot but you never know.

Have to figure Cotton, Baer know some guys that might be willing.

I was talking to my brother about his connection to the islands. I thought the same as you, but apparently LaRussa is actually 'the guy' working the Islands coach S was sort of the closer. Either way you are right it is a tough loss. I would be more concerned though losing Baer or Cotton. In that case we are talking about overhauling complete playbooks and terminology. With a position coach its more about techniques and the 'little things'.

Really interested to see who coach Sanchez is going after.

Wasn't trying to say Joe was a bad coach by any means, but I expect the equivalent, if not better from Sanchez. Losing the Island connection hurts a lot. He was pretty the only one who had a strong base here besides LaRussa. Islanders usually respond best to their own.

When I spoke with Coach Sanchez at the meet the coaches event, he said that for the first time in the programs history, all the coaches had contracts so at least Tony has tried to lock down his staff as best he can. I get the impression that Baer & Cotton see UNLV as a challenge and a long term position. That's not to say if ALOT of money were offered they wouldn't take it, but I get a vibe they want to make this program great.

Misread your post. Totally agree, hopefully coach Sanchez has somebody on deck.

I was just pointing out losing a position coach sucks, but is not nearly as damaging a coordinator. Baer and Cotton are here for the long haul I believe.

Word is new guy should be made public shortly. Lots of experience. Mentored several first round picks. Several common threads with current staff.
This. New coach has college head coaching experience, a great recruiter, and great ability to recognize talent. Has coached SEVERAL All-Americans over the years and knows his stuff. A very nice pick up for Tony Sanchez & UNLV imo.

If you know who it is, why not tell us? We promise not to tell. :)

Educated Guess purely based off of well nothing other then possible relationships and minimal hints.
Tony Samuel?
Not sure it's Samuel. But definitely a good possibility. However, doesn't jive with Chi's post. Wherever Chi uncovered it, I'm coming up with nada. Looking forward to announcement.
