I was surprised that no one has commented about the game against ewu. UNLV is so much better than last year. It will take a while to figure out how much better, but the difference is astounding. It has been a long time since unlv has buried weaker opponents. The BIG question is what happens when the opponents are of higher quality. It will be fun too see what happens.

There are no posts on the free board because it is only allowed three posts a week. So now all the normal conversation has moved to the confidential board.

I burned out on the negativity so I quit coming to see the conversations. But I will say I like this staff and I like these players and I am hopeful this year. Yes I agree just a few years ago we would have lost to Eastern Washington under the previous regime. After the other night I don’t think we are going to lose to anyone we are supposed to beat.

I have no idea what this means, unless it's sarcasm, which is notoriously misinterpreted over the 'net.

Given that criteria, we should expect to celebrate the end of 2017 (December 30th at home to Boise St, our first Mountain West game) with a 11-1 record. The lone blemish figures to be Arizona. The Wildcats are the one and only P5 opponent on the schedule. Oops! I forgot Illinois. Yes, they are a Big 10 team, but they have a good (bad?) chance to capture last place in this season’s Big 10. While they, like us, are currently 3-0, upon closer examination, they’re worlds apart from the Rebels.

While it’s problematic, trying to compare records at such an early point in the season, it’s not impossible. We’ve all played three cupcakes, although Stanford might dispute that description of Eastern Washington. And the Illini barely (77-74) squeaked past UT-Martindale, whereas we (and Arizona) blew out all three of our opponents, to date.

To put some numbers to the conversation, currently the Rebels are 26th in America in FG% @52.9%. Compare that to Illinois which sits at 143rd-45.9%. For points scored, UNLV is 63rd, having posted 297 points. The Illini are 134th-261 points. 3-pt %, we are 103rd with 37.5%, while they are a dismal 340th at 23.1%, and finally Total RB’s. UNLV-6th with 51.0 RB’s per game. Illinois is 156th and 38.3rpg.

What happens once we get into the in-conference schedule is anybody’s guess, but the OOC results are easy to predict. Must we play the games? Or maybe all our opponents will agree to save face and just pencil in a big fat “L” in the record books. We could make better use of the time figuring out how to beat Arizona.

But seriously, it’s early, and anything can happen. There’s certainly no way to predict injuries, transfers, etc. But we seem to be deep enough to withstand a normal amount of misfortune. And it’s an uncommon luxury, of late, to be a Rebel fan, and actually believe that we will win the games we should win. Over the past five years that has not been the case. There have been far too many losses to teams which we held a definite edge in athletic ability.

But we’ve learned the painful lesson that recruiting athletes is not enough. A coach must recruit a team. That means they must also be taught to play together. They aren’t just auditioning for the “next level”. So, if we arrive on 12/30/17 at 11-1, I won’t be disappointed. 12-0 and I’ll be over the moon. Anything less than 11-1 will be unacceptable. There’s a new Sheriff in town. The Mountain West should take notice.

Note: I've realized I overlooked next week's match-up with the winner/loser of the Utah-Ole Miss game. So adjust the numbers accordingly please.
Go Rebels!

Caught the 1st 2 games on the live stream but got an in person look on Friday. Overall the team looked much better in person then they did on the stream. They also looked light years better than last year and it’s mostly based on the way they played as a team. With superior talent, I feared a lot of isolations but saw a lot of set pieces that left 2nd tier players open to move (Clyburn, Smith, etc.).

Juiston is the real deal. He will be the fan favorite as competition improves. McCoy looked great but he seemed to get gassed quickly. I may be overly sensitive because of Bennett but it had me wondering. Maybe the ankle injury put him a bit back on the conditioning curve. Don’t get me wrong, never a lack of effort. Just heavy breathing and quick substitutions. It was only one game.

Also nice to see half time adjustments work. We are deep so we can wear down teams in the 2nd half but coaching will be key in crucial mins in tight games. I’m encouraged and excited to see what they can accomplish.

I don't think we're nearly as deep as it seems. We have quite a few project players that can give you 5 emergency minutes today, but are nowhere near ready for conference level competition. Then we have a few high level conference ready bench players that are strictly role players. One of the top players gets hurt or is otherwise unavailable, and we will thin out real quick.

But we are parsecs ahead of last years team. And that's at nearly every position. Even Jovan Mooring is significantly better just by virtue of having a better surrounding cast.

Good to talk basketball again.

Love the fact that even though our go to scorer Jojo wasn't hitting his shots, other Rebels stepped up and played solid. Really pulled away in the 2nd half. Don't know how big other MWC teams are but McCoy and Juiston are becoming a nice tandem down low. If Menzies can coach these kids up, we should get to 20 wins easy and be a problem come MWC tourney. Glad we get to catch the Rebs on the strip this week!!!

I am just going to enjoy things as they go. I’m too old to critique every nuance of the game. These guys seem to shoot, pass and rebound better than any team in the last 5-10 years. I like what they have shown so far.

Maybe I’m missing something but this team seems relatively ego-less. The Rebels freely pass the ball - where is all that hero ball from the las 5 years? Shakur Juiston is an absolute warrior- McCoy is going to owe him a couple million just for developing him in practice. I disagree about depth - I think the Rebels are deep and compete with each other. Still looking for a really tough game and how the coaches and players handle it. In the mean time just enjoying the show.

3 and 0. The team is playing better than any team in the last several years. The talent level is better and the chemistry seems real good. It is too early to predict ncaa level success but I am optimistic for the first time in a long time. Go rebels.

Watching the team this year is so much different than last year for sure but really for many years. Seeing them live helps you realize the sheer size of these guys. Chris Wood was tall but very thin. Zimmerman was tall but lanky. McCoy, Juiston, Beck, these dudes are huge. They should get by Rice tonight and then they will get a great test against Utah (most likely them opposed to Ole Miss). Having a lot of fun watching these guys this year. Hope more people start showing up to the games.

Bench is pretty solid. Diong and Dembele had a rough games on Friday's. They are very much works in progress in many ways, but are still good for defense and rebounds in the very least.

Everyone else has shown to be good pieces other than Jay Green right now. So I would say we are pretty deep.

Feel good about this take. We aren't that deep. Pray our bench gets better over the course of the year, or our first 6 are ready to go all year.

I think Hardy, Beck, and Smith will be solid for us on the bench. It'd be really nice if Diong gets into a comfort zone backing up McCoy. Dembele just doesn't have the instincts to sub for McCoy very effectively. Stands around watching the rebound instead of just going after the ball.
