Devante Davis draft status anyone?

Really all depends on his 40 time at the combine to be honest. I know the 40 should not hold as much sway as it does but in Davis' case if he runs a good 40 time with his size it will help him a ton. I think he compares favorably with DeVante Adams from Fresno who got drafted by Green Bay. From the few reports I read he could go anywhere from 5-7 rounds. If he blows up at the combine he might sneak into the third round.

It hurt him that his senior year was marred by that wrist injury. Had he been able to reproduce his junior season I think he was more of a 3-5 round guy not a 5-7 guy. It also hurt his cause that he was nursing a hamstring injury during the Senior Bowl and wasn't able to show much.

I really like the kid and think any NFL team that takes him will get a solid player.

Davis' game is far superior to Payne. Better route runner, better after the catch, willing to go across the middle, tougher to bring down. Payne may have had more high light reel catches and was great on the jump ball, but Davis is better in every other area.

What is the rule on red shirting due to injury? Is it a certain number of games played within a season? Also I think he played early on, got hurt and finished the season. Not sure if that plays into it or not.

I don't know that another season would have helped or hurt to be quite honest. In a sport like football were injuries can happen at any time, I think you take your shot at the NFL. Even if he did get to come back for another year and posted similar numbers to his junior year he probably still only gets 3-5 round grade.

I see your point about the red shirt, but not sure how much it would have helped his draft stock.

He was injured early, if he didn't come back toward the end of the season he should have been eligible.
Overall, its always better to leave after a big season when you aren't at a major program. You want an imprint in the mind of the teams that are considering you. At least he picked up the combine invite but he plays a very competitive position

You have a feel for what Devante will run the 40 in? What do you think he needs to run to get drafted? He obviously has the size, showed pretty good hands throughout his career, and while he was never a super elusive guy in the open field he was able to shake off tacklers due to his size and strength.

If Philip Payne got an invite to a camp as a free agent, I think Devante will get at least that. He is by far a more polished receiver than Payne was.

Couldn't say, its a deep draft at WR and it's really in the eye of the beholder. He had one great season and two really good seasons during his career.
Former stars Earvin Johnson, Ryan Wolfe and Phillip Payne all had a shot with the NFL and Davis is the most athletically gifted of the group. I just hope he wrecks it at the combine but the Senior Bowl would have been his best audition.

I agree the Senior Bowl is almost as important as the combine. Coaches get to evaluate guys in practice/game situations rather than drills.

I think his size alone will catch somebodies attention. I think he compares favorably to DeVante Adams who went to the Packers.

Really hoping he kills it at the combine. Really good kid.
