Depressing

It’ll get better. We just need to give more time. Be patient folks. You can’t just flip a roster. Patience, I tell you, patience. It’s the only way.

lt will get better when the mythical MWC is gone. Fans will never come back to the Mack with lousy league with no teams. Merger should be now because mythical tv money for rural MWC is just that, a myth.

Once the new conference forms, the good teams all bolted, UNM and UNLV will be the flagships in a conference that’s as poor as the WAC or the Big West. And you’re right, nobody is going to watch those games, even if you are competing for that one spot which equates to a 13-14-15 seed.

I like competition … I want to see good games. Being able to actually see and be the flag football champion at Mr Magoos School for the Blind …. Yeah, count me out.

He has only had 4 years. Give him 4-6 more. Slow builds are always better. It is impossible to turn a team around within a year or two. Just ask Odom

Or Lindy. She took her dear sweet time to get things rolling.
We can keep repeating the same thing over and over with different combinations of words, sentences, and paragraphs, but the bottom line is the decision will be made at the end of the year between the UNLV President and AD in regards to the future of coach Kruger at UNLV, and nothing we say or do will change that fact!

This makes me think what could have been if Rice had been given 8-10 years. He was so smart he would have figured it all out. We’d be a nationally relevant power.

Note: this may be the first non-sarcastic post of this thread for good reason.

The mid season firing, I felt at the time we’d pay long term. There was going to be damage, collateral damage. And I figured it’d be a couple seasons sacrificed. Then the debacle hiring that finished with one of the worst possible hire imaginable, Menzies. Three wasted years, zero joy/pride. Then Otz for a couple of years. Bad basketball, zero joy/pride, guy was using the school. Then KK. It’s appearing like 4 straight years of fruitless, bland, hard to watch hoops. This program was massacred.

It has become depressing to watch UNLV basketball. A few year back I would go every once in a will with family members that including my own kids, brothers, cousins, nephews, nieces, etc.. Now none of them have any interest in going to games, UNLV had a chance to interest the next generation of fans, but they have destroyed that chance by putting out an overpriced inferior product that would only be of interest to the casual fan if you lived somewhere like Barstow or North Dakota. Getting boat raced by a fringe top 25 team like Mississippi State is just another feather in the cap of mediocrity of coaching which appears to be the ceiling of the abilities of coach Kruger. He may be a nice guy, but as a coach he is above his head and should go back to being an assistant, or take his money and retire.

Otz was a good hire actually in terms of hiring someone that knows CBB, I didn’t understand his last recruiting class but he can actually coach the game. I think if he had the new portal rules, it would be a different story.

The issue I have is the fact that DRF used the buyout from Iowa State on a green assistant coach with only a couple years of experience and surrounded him with a lot of coaching experience, guys that knew more than CKK. There’s a reason why his first staff all bolted. I actually felt like Hartman was more HC material than CKK ever was and had all the qualities a HC needs.

His last recruiting class was zero effort because he knew he had an upcoming landing spot where he wanted to be. Collect some decent coin and move on.

just couldn’t land a difference maker, some thought that was nick blake or Reece Brown. The class itself was rated around the top 50. I thought Tillis was a bum but he actually could contribute and understood the offense.

I think it was always going to be Iowa State in terms of pursuing a dream job and even DRF tried to keep him with an extension instead of just taking the buyout. DRF was the one with zero effort.

I go to every game. It is depressing.

Football has absolutely proven if you win they will come. It doesn't need to be a big name coach. I bet less than 20% of the UNLV fan base had ever heard of Odom before he came. It doesn't need to be big pay. USU Danny Sprinkle got $ 900K and went to the dance his first year.

I don't believe we can afford the $ 4 million needed to lure away a successful bigger time coach. You need either a previously failed P4 coach with a vision/plan or a young winning lower level coach. NO assistants without previous head coaching experience. I would take a run at Russell Turner first - $ $388,000. ( I know he hasn't been interested in leaving in the past but who knows) Tod Simon $ 344,000. Brought a program in the boondocks to life. Knows Vegas. Joe Pasternak - UCSB $ 500,000. NCAA's two of the past three years. Knows the West. Eric Henderson - South Dakota State. $ 379,000 Summit League 1st or 2nd every year he's been head coach.(5 years)

And the list goes on.

BUT - unless you can figure a way to raise significant NIL $$ forget it and keep KK. It doesn't need to be a MIL a player. But a coach needs players to compete at the level we want. And I don't believe we can get them without money.

1.) Agreed!
2.) Absolutely not, we should not settle for Kevin again!
3.) Utah State doesn’t have a huge NIL? Sprinkle coached his tail off and we can hire someone who can do the same. We don’t need huge NIL either, just change the coach and get rid of the stink!

So.. you seem to be knowledgeable about Utah States NIL. What is it?

No, the point is there’s probably is nothing to write home about either but yet they have won and danced with like 3 different HC’s and we haven’t been to the NCAA’s since 2013!

Let’s just change the HC, I think that would be a good start!

This situation is especially frustrating because I truly believe we have (injuries notwithstanding) a top 2 MWC roster that has the upside of a super lucky sweet 16 run. It really seems like there's no scheme, no players understand their role (DTJ included) and it devolves very quickly. I thought after the UNR game last year that the fans walking out moaning about CKK were a bit silly but now it's clear to me that man, it might just be the coach.

I wish it worked out with Kruger, because he's clearly a guy who cares about the program and the city. I think this team would really benefit from the extra juice of an interim HC, but I suspect that the AD wants to wait until after the redshirt window closes to make any such moves. Maybe they have a lot of NIL money wrapped up in that Toyota ad I see all the time, lol.

We’re not paying a basketball coach millions when the budget is mostly geared towards football now.

I think your list is spot on, not my preference but I’d also add the Grand Canyon coach. They win, get paid cheap and can coach.

This last game where they put CKK on a mic. on a timeout and he tried to sound all smart and I believe he tells the team we are going to come out and run the same play we opened the 2nd half. The players just looked at him as they clearly didn't know which play that was. DTj even had that lost look and said which one and CKK rambled something off and then DTj still looking somewhat unsure said the one where we .. and with a counter clockwise hand motion said something like where we went like this. And, CKK said something like yeah. Back on the court after the timeout and called play it turned into a turnover. It hurts to watch.

There’s always preplanned media garbage.

Some coaches go out with media before the game. It’s bs. It’s all media gamesmanship. We need to get this message out, ask me this question. I’ll give you info, candy coat us. It’s dishonest.

Last night one announcer said UNLV will be a force in MWC play. Now let’s think about this. He’s seen them play twice and they were horrible those two times. Even if he saw them play 7 times and had honest assessment of their play, there’s no way he could have that take based on any visual evidence, especially if you’re a subject matter expert. So he’s on the take, it’s the media softening truths, which plays very well with the kumbaya klan of tender hearts, but it’s plain bs. It sucks when you hear it, but Barkley doesn’t candy coat, he’s real … the Walkin’ Rebs.

For some coaches, the getting the media on your side to protect you and the program is vital to them. Of chief importance. Some don’t care. Others give it minimal attention. Menzies lived by it, spent more time on that aspect than actual coaching. Lon was very in tune with it. Spoonhour really didn’t care. Rice and Bayno were similar, a necessary evil that they dealt with minimally.

It’s kinda the way of the world right now. Control media, you control the narrative and perceptions. Truth is an afterthought. It makes sense, many people are too stupid, lazy or weak to think or even trust their own intuition or eyeballs.

I just can't invest any more time into this product. I can't stomach the 6 points in 9 minutes, the four and five minute droughts as we continue to run the very same high screen game where everyone hedges really high because none of our bigs are a threat to roll, and even if they did we're certainly not going to pass it to them. Maybe well throw in some kick to the wing weaving where the wing tries to penetrate but instead of going to the cup they go around the defender and end up on the back side with nobody to distribute the rock without a risky pass. I'm tired of everyone going soft to the cup and letting people penetrate to their strong hand and getting outworked for defensive position on the glass. I'm tired of our generally very passive defense where we sag off and like let people make passes without pressure all day so we can save energy to stand around on defense.

When Bear was able to manhandle smaller bigs, the offense looked a little more lively, but throw a double team and our lack of motion off the ball makes feeding the post almost a guaranteed turnover. Yes we're banged up with 3 of our pre-season top 8 rotation on the shelf right now, but the product on the court is the product on the court. You can book it, we'll end up with 19-20 wins and be in 6-7th place in a pretty mediocre basketball conference and we'll one tournament game against a really bad team and then get crushed by someone with a pulse.

Expecting something different is lying to yourself, how many years of evidence do we need to see before we accept what is reality?

Doesn’t it seem like the previous three years, plus or minus a little in any category, is the same? Intensity, o and d philosophy, rebounding, tempo, etc, etc, etc? If we blurred players, numbers and names and watched a game from 2021, you couldn’t guess what season it is.

That’s great if you’re winning at a high level. It’s incredibly painful when you’re poor. That he’s changed up NOTHING at all boggles my mind, it shows he has zero versatility as a coach. Sure, you could say it’s the players but getting new players is easier than ever. Yet recruiting is the same. A good player and 4 or 5 others that could make any other 5-12 MWC roster. So you can blame recruiting but a coach controls that.

It’s been a failure so far. Dedan is too good of a college player for this. He’s not a primary scorer except in this system. He’d be really, really good as a 3/4/5 option. Tha5 his eyes are looking elsewhere isn’t a surprise.

I look at the current UNLV President and AD, and I have no doubt that they are already searching for the replacement for Kruger. No way he stays unless they want to move the game into the Cox Pavilion.

No doubt that they are consulting with the Thomas family regarding their preference for a new coach.

Can we afford to keep Odom and get a bb upgrade? I have no clue but the way UNLV always talks about a lack of funds I feel our choices might be both FB and BB coach return or both are gone.

I have read and heard nothing about funding problems lately, and I have seen a lot of new companies, including multiple hotel/casinos, getting on board lately, My expectation is because of what Odom has done, the funding is now available. I also expect they will find the money to pay Odom and extend the contract.

Does UNLV have a fund raising NIL program so for individuals who want to contribute? I am thinking the $20 here $100 there etc.
