Here is a quick breakdown of tonight's game guys and gals, remember it was just 1 game.
The applause for MM was loud when he was announced considering there were about 2500 in the stands.
The passing in the half court was much better than I expected, however after hearing so much attention was on defense it was scary how many times we got smoked off the dribble or a simple pick-n-roll play. I'd hate to watch the film on how many dead layups we allowed tonight. We scored about 50 a half, which is high considering we didn't have a ton of fast breaks...although this has to be the worst opponent we'll see this season.
Wesleyan can really shoot the ball even though their final 3pt% will be low, and even though they don't have much size I guess this team will fare well in their league.
Our PA man has lost the emphatic "THREEEEE POINT GOOOOOOAAAAL" as well as the deep toned "NINE SEVEN THREE" (or whatever the streak is at) when we knock down the first 3 ball. I hope he was just having a bad night and this isn't a new trend.
Clyburn: a skilled, long, athletic, versatile player, but he HAS to be in the best cardio shape on the team as he seriously doesn't take a play off. Instantly my favorite player on the court. Terrific nose for the ball on the offensive glass. Gets his points without plays being run for him, he truly is efficient. He took 1 "bad shot" and drained it. When he dunked on that dude and got the T my angle was perfect to see how damn far he took off from, as I had no idea he was that athletic. A poor-mans version for sure, but similar game of another SF we had for 1 season about 15 years ago??? 22 pts, 11 boards, 5 steals, 3 blocks
Jones: His calves remind me of LJ. He threw down an amazing dunk over some poor Dakota kid where he jump-stepped and off 2 feet lifted up and switched to 1 hand and almost took the rim off! Has good, but slow developing post moves and a serviceable jumper to 15 feet. Struggled from the line, but has a good form and a soft touch so it should improve, which is good as he'll be at the FT line a lot. Jones will be most effective at the PF position for us as he's clearly not a 5. 14 pts, 5 boards (which is not enough considering his size)
Poyser: Really good scorer that was underappreciated/underused last season. I forgot how athletic he is as he rises with ease to dunk in traffic. We all know him so I won't go on about him, but it was clear with the substitution pattern that the staff want to use him at the 2 and Mooring at the 1. Joe has said it a lot and it's accurate, he is much more effective playing off the ball and attacking from the wing. 15 pts, 6 boards, 5 assists to 2 turnovers.
Mooring: Appears to be a confident perimeter scorer, but I don't know if he's a pure shooter...if that makes any sense. He seems to have a good feel for creating a little space and then dropping a shot on you. I don't know if he's capable of the PG duties as he dribbles the ball up vs. passing it up and made at least 3 horrible passes on the break that resulted in 2 points for Wesleyan. He is also the worst defender of all our guards as I'd guess he gave up more points than he scored. 10 pts, 2 assists.
Ofoegbu: Experienced player, good shooter, takes it to the cup in a slow and physical way. Below average defender and rebounder even though he's huge for a guard. In a game like this he could have started at PF for either team and nobody would have thought anything of it. Maybe it's his hair, but he looked as tall as anyone on the floor. 10 pts, 4 assists.
Green: I guess he dropped the Bellot from his name along with the weight this off-season. He started at the 4 and was MUCH more confident and effective than anytime last year. With that said he's well below average defender with SLOW feet and little to no athleticism. He can shoot it when open as he's not going to create his own shot. He found his man and boxed out for defensive boards but is far from a high flyer. He got TORCHED off the dribble regardless of who he was guarding. 14 pts, 3 boards.
Baxter: High flyer (who is thinner than Keon) as evidenced by his dunks in the warm up drills, but still raw. Made the best pass of the night to Jones (I think) for an easy layup, was clearly pumped up and crowd responded. He was credited with 0 blocks but he altered many. He has a good touch in the mid-range, but isn't a deep threat. I would put him down as a 3 or stretch 4 in college since his he's 3 inches away from a TRUE shot blocking center. 5 pts, 4 boards.
Zion: In limited minutes he appears to be a smooth, athletic guard. Way too soon to tell if he can handle the PG duties. 4 pts, 2 boards.
Gorgi: Got 3 rebounds in 2 minutes, so he's averaging 60 rebounds per 40 minutes played! He's very slow and unathletic - a project to say the very least. On the plus side he's very team oriented - always cheering, patting on the back, high 5's, etc. 0 pts, 3 boards.
Bush: Looked like a very confident backup. Pretty athletic. 2 pts, 1 board.
