There are @ 350 D1 basketball coaches. From that, take away 84 coaches in Power 6 conferences leaving @ 265 coaches left. What makes the top 5% of this 265? What makes a coach middle around for up to a dozen years or more and then start to excel ? (Porter Moser) I don't believe it's “coaching“. By that I mean I don't believe a coach has some magic practice or in-game formula that allows him to take fair to good athletes and make them play great. I believe coaches stay great (Few) or spike great ( Shantay Legans) because of players. Coach Few inherited a very good program and kept it going to the point that players come to him. He has had that privilege for over 10 years. But other coaches can get there for a short time by hitting it fortunate and getting just the right recruits. ( Legans at Eastern Washington getting the Groves Brother who wanted to stay near home) or ( Otzelberger inheriting Mike Daum) These are coach-of-the-day type coaches. They are having a good run because they hit on some late developing players or they got a couple of players that click with each other. We lived that with TJ. He had Daum and Jenkins. Perfect complement to each other. But he couldn't duplicate it. We don't need to keep chasing these coach-of-the day types. We need a coach who has proven he can take a program and keep it competitive for more than a couple of years. Can he recruit over the span of time? That's what DRF needs to look for. There really are less than 30 out of 265 coaches that fit this bill. Less than 10 are available. Can she see what she needs and then can she afford it?

I believe she'll chase a coach-of-the-day and then we'll see if he can repeat his success. Very few coaches do.
