UNLV is also taking a hard look at Marcos Rivera from Liberty High (6'0" 195). An all-conference 1st team pitcher, he nearly beat Rancho yesterday to open the regional playoffs (5-4). He also plays OF and has hit 9 homers this season.

Recruiting

Based on current baseball high school rankings, Las Vegas has some of the best ball teams in the country. Sierra Vista and Bishop Gorman are both ranked in the top 25, and Rancho is a top level program that has been ranked in some of the poles during the season and started off in the top 10. With this type of talent they should be able to compete with any team from the West coast or SEC.... If Chambers can recruit the cream of the local crop!

Baseball America poll:

Sierra Vista #15 nationally
Bishop Gorman #16 nationally
Rancho - has been ranked
Green Valley - also top notch program

I haven't followed hs baseball for years. What happened to Silverado and Durango? Are they still relevant? They were always stacked in the late 90's; when I was in high school.

Silverado was elminated by Liberty in the sunrise conference playoffs.

Durango has slid off the map, victim of Vegas area growth. Sierra Vista, Spring Valley and Desert Oasis all pull from what Durango used to (which was originally Clark's talent pool).

This was a tough year for coach chambers with still trying to build a team from what was left over from the team last year. He has done a good job that has had a couple of bumps along the way, but overall he showed the team is on its way to improving.

With all the talent he has already recruited for next year, and the top notch level of high school ball in Las Vegas (probably the top 5 teams in Las Vegas are better than the top 5 in any other city in the country), I expect that UNLV will be a top 10 team within 3-5 years. If you think it can't be done, go look at TCU. The coach for UNLV took over at TCU about 6 years ago, and they have already gone as high as #1.
