Beard is the new UNLV Coach

Wow.
Well, embarrassing as that "search" was, it's over now. I'm very relieved about that. No more chances of embarrassing UNLV further for the time being.

No use whining about the hire at this point, chances are he's our future for at least the next several years. Time to get behind him....

Hold your horses. Anderson said Baird has "agreed in principle" to becoming next UNLV coach. He said the same thing about the Irish Leprechaun you guys were in love with.

What he did at UALR this year seems very impressive. 30-5 record with an entirely new roster. This guy might be the real deal.

Question: If Purdue beats UALR in the first round game, would we be having this discussion?

At this point, yes... you all need to realize thus is a pretty solid dumb luck hire by the committee... hes got a win now attitude, rebuilding doesnt phase him, and hes got the intangibles many of you were screaming for with nabbing Underwood.

Little Rock averaged almost 72 points a game. UNLV almost 78.

LR shot 266 3 pointers and hit 38%
UNLV shot 252 and hit 33%

Dude broke his hand punching a white board to drive a point home during halftime of their Sun Belt tourney final.

I like me a fiery coach.

Look- the problem here is image. If you ignore the "Runnin'" label, and face the reality that there are financial restrictions, this is a good hire. Those who are pining for a "name" are not being realistic. Names don't win basketball games. Running does not win basketball games. Xs and Os win. Look at Syracuse: they may set college hoops back 30 years, but there they are in the final four. That zone should be outlawed, BTW.

His pay is in the 1 million dollar range according to LVRJ, thats a lot I think. Thinking he would be more in the 400-500k range. And could have used that extra 500k towards the stadium fund

Lobo Fan here. FWIW, overall, I think that Beard is a good hire, maybe a great hire. He is an up and coming head coach that has proved he can turn programs around quickly and win in the NCAA tournament while a huge underdog. He has done more with less and who knows what he can do with the increased resources at UNLV?

I would say though that I was surprised that since the AD fired Rice in January that they didn't seize the opportunity to go after some bigger names that were not coaching while the season was still going on. It seems the main advantage of an early firing is to beat the rest of the crowd to possible candidates before the end of the season. But like I said, I think Beard looks like a good hire and even better than Cronin for $2-$3 Million.

1M is probably the max (w/ NCAA win incentive), around 700k base.

They did, coaches tend to shy away from disfunctional front offices. Lots of big names on the list were vetted but either interest wasnt mutual or school decided against. The whole Cronin thing makes it look ridiculous when we hire Beard, but Cronin was 3rd or 4th option with high price tag..
