Bailey

Based off what we just saw, hard to argue.

To be fair it looked like our second string O line, which looked a lot like last year. Not giving the QB much time or creating the same holes for our backs. Also he didn't have White or K. Williams creating space and getting open

Bailey did hold on to it too long and missed some of the tells pre snap, now part of that may be not seeing them in the first half, but still not a good look.

Brumfield looks really, really good. I'm glad he came back. Friel looked pretty sold too TBH. More comfortable in the pocket and confident in his throws.

I'm still not too worried with the QB position. But it is safe to say, that if Brumfield stays healthy we have our best chance to make a little noise.

Friel looked good with backups… Bailey didn’t look comfortable at all and he is a high level recruit who should be able to make things happen against an FCS team.

Tom Brady would have sucked with the o-line play Bailey got.
ISU was marking time for Fruel.

Either of those qbs could be as bad or as good as they were today, who knows? Neither deserves the start next game. Brumfield was excellent. But Bailey should sue for non-support and Friel may be better, but today was nodetermined.

BTW, the first. "Come on Coach!" was heard in our section today. It wasn't a compliment.

Watched Bailey's reps twice now. He was locked into first reads, didn't get through progressions. Was reading presnap stuff and ISU was running a lot of coverage and blitz game at him. Now in fairness to him the 2nd string line was getting beat--but ISU was also bringing 5-6 on most passing downs, and our WRs weren't creating a ton of separation. But in 'turnabout being fairplay' fairness, that ball has to come out on 5 step drops especially when pressure is coming (now, we run a ton of shotgun, so it's really a 3 step drop from the shotgun position but it should behave just like a 5 step drop from under center).

Now, because I don't have an all 22 I can't really see the coverage packages or the route combinations we were running. Arroyo could have been calling man busting plays against zones--can't rule it out--but usually when you're in what is effectively a 4 minute drill where you're trying to move the ball and kill clock you're going to run a route combo where one side is zone effective and the other is man effective and it's up to the QB to pick up on that presnap and if he's wrong to get to the other side of the field.

Bailey missed some easy throws tonight, and was missing long and high and late for the most part. I'll chalk this up to some rust because I know ISU wasn't throwing anything at him that SEC teams weren't.

Well, we had a 4 star QB that was at power schools on our roster last season … and that didn’t work out too well.

Still more time needed but even as he gets comfortable, I doubt he will catch an uninjured Doug. Granted, it was against Menzies-like competition, but that was one of the finest QB performances I’ve seen at UNLV. He plays 4Q and UNLV doesn’t go conservative (yes, they should have removed players and gone conservative), he throws for 500+ and 6 TD’s …

It was one half of football with the 2nd string, in a game that was already decided.

Recency bias is one of the funniest things to observe.

If we used one game of action to make judgements, Kurt Palendech is the greatest QB in UNLV history for his game vs Wyoming.

I'm not so sure they went all that conservative. They were still throwing the ball, but the O-Line play got really shakey. Add in, Bailey had a little paralysis by analysis and seemed slow on his reads. Add in a drop or two and drives just stagnated.

Arroyo didn't take his foot off the gas, execution just stalled things in my opinion.

I think we found our quarterback. Depth as well.

QB play has been.....Sporadic in the past to be kind. We've had some decent QBs. Problem has always been if one went down, the drop in talent to the next guy has been really steep.

Bailey didn't look great, but based on his recruiting grade and limited action at Tennessee he should be ok if anything happens to Doug. Friel is capable of winning some games as well..

Might be the deepest we've been at QB that I can remember..

Prefer not to have that theory tested and Doug stays healthy and continues to play well..

True, But Bailey has been sharing reps with the ones, Friel has been practicing with the 2s. So a bit more familiarity there.

It's not a great sample size, but he didn't look that good.

I will say that our top 3 receivers seem to be a notch above the rest. K. Williams and White are legit #1 guys, while Weimer could get open and make the most of it (barring the drop).

I think there’s something to be said for those that have already had a full year in the system. Even Friel had a comfort and feel about him we didn’t see much of last year. For Bailey it’s about maintaining confidence and going up from here.

I know ISU is bad, but Dougie B is dynamic. He showed aspects to his game we didn’t see last year. Accuracy has been a concern in the past, but with the exception of the dropped INT, he hit almost every target. A couple 30 yard sideline throws on a line were awesome to behold. His touch throw over the top, OMG. It is clear he is being developed.

Did you watch his reps? He had zero time to throw the ball. The 2nd unit o-line was atrocious against an FCS. You give Bailey the starting offense and he would be just fine.

I tend to agree with you.. Hard to judge Bailey when he’s running with the 2’s, especially the O-line.. I liked his mechanics/scrambling ability.. It’s nice to have 2 guys, even 3, with Friel, that we can somewhat rely on if injuries occur.. Nice depth at the QB position.. On to Cal, I think the Rebs got a decent chance to pull the upset..

Brum and Friel looks good in this game. I don't think we should give up on Bailey not now not ever. He got the talents. He just need some opportunities to show it. Support damn it! Support the kid that traveled so far to take a chance on a school.

Remember how horrible Rodgers looked first game last year then he bounced back against Hawaii. Harrison Bailey has way more talent. He is, at the very least, quality depth
I hope so. It’s hard to tell right now. He’s decorated, obviously. And yesterday was brutal.

But he wasn’t given a chance to succeed yesterday.

Hard to really judge someone over 1+ quarters of football. He definitely didn’t look as good as one would have hoped. The kid did start 3 games for Tennessee though so I believe the talent is there. Personally I’m just going to chalk this up to a bad performance and won’t judge til I see more from him.

He held the ball..looked a lot like Rodgers in the opener last year.

Caleb Herring made the same point. Not trusting what he sees, or that he's not trusting his guys will be open. Said he's been good at practice, but that's what has held him back.

I think he was sacked 4 times? Twice the rush got there quick, the other two were probably on him holding the ball too long.
