$ 70 million

We cannot compete with that, but at this point in our program development we don’t have to. We need to continue building a program that consistently wins the MWC and is ranked in the latter half of the top 25. That is doable with our facilities and the gravitas of the City and media market for recruits. Odom’s belief in UNLV as competing for championships is not wrong and should be carried over by Whitfield and Harper in guiding their search for the next HC. If we don’t believe it we shouldn’t expect others to. What we do need now is for folks in our community with the resources to step up and support this institution. It occurs at most other universities and needs to begin occurring here. It’s really our biggest shortfall which is as much a culture of Vegas thing as it is an Admn problem.

It’s Purdue, you’re not going to win there. It was a dumb football decision by Odom. Got to chase the bag, I get it but that’s not a legacy. So he’ll be crying about it not too long from now, just like he’s been crying about his firing at Mizzou.

Not gonna trash Odom. His work here was incredible and UNLV came out well ahead on the deal. He elevated the program to where no one thought was possible, certainly not in the short timeframe. Time for UNLV and its community to take the next step and continue its trajectory. Next hire is all that matters now.

We can’t be inside people’s heads.

I have specific motivations and they probably different from yours. And neither is right or wrong, but they’re right for you.

I try to see things through multiple angles, not just from my own experiences. If you personally know the guy … you have much greater insight.

We all prioritize things differently and we don’t know each others order.

You could have argued the same thing with him coming here. He turned a loser into a winner. He isn't afraid of that.
Now Purdue hasn't invested like other B10 teams, but they have money to spend. And given that they fired someone after 2 years they may want to spend more.
It's a tough job, but so is Indiana.

Purdue couldn’t open up the checkbook with Walters, who came from the Odom tree. Is suddenly going to compete with the upper echelon of the Big10 in NIL?

I don’t think so. Indiana is so far ahead of Purdue now and even more so with their success. People are buying in, saying Purdue a one win program can be like Indiana is not reality. Purdue is literally the worst P4 job because of their shitty NIL.

Good luck competing against the USCs and Oregons, and Penn States, Michigans and Ohio States. They are all upping the ante, Purdue is so far behind it’s laughable. Odom will schedule soft non conference to be competitive and will get killed in conference play, it’s what he did at Mizzou.

I know what you mean, and I'm being a little facetious here, but none of these coaching jobs are tough jobs.

Oil field roughneck in the winter with a stay at home wife and four kids is a tough job. Company commander in a hot war is a tough job. Etc. Every coach with just one stint in a P4 or top G5 program is financially set for life unless he is stupid or addicted. Even CKK is set financially. He can get fired this year and be a junior varsity coach at a high school for the rest of his life and never worry about paying bills. Better than most every man in America.

Every coach goes into these jobs knowing they will be fired within 3-5 years. ( Current FBS average tenure is 3.7 years) Some wildly exceed this, but most don't. If a man has the correct mindset these are, in fact, easy jobs. Hire some good assistants. Make sure you don't break NCAA rules. Bullshit the press, fans, recruits and their parents. Don't screw the cheerleaders.

The job is only hard if a coach let's it get to him.
