Tomorrow is kind of a milestone day for me in regards to UNLV basketball. I didn't count exhibitions, but I did count the games at the Orleans, MGM and all conference tournament games at the Thomas and Mack Center. Saturday night's UNLV vs Air Force game will be my 500th STRAIGHT UNLV home game attended. It started with the final game of the 1985-86 season (vs Fresno, I believe) and it's been going ever since that game. A lot of fantastic basketball, a lot of eyesores, plenty of jubilation and heartache. But it mostly shows I'm a glutton for punishment
Call me what you will, but loyal should be included.
Can't help but think if my favorite UNLV team, the 1986-87 squad, wasn't so unique and special, my life would be drastically different today.
Man, I think about everything that happened with UNLV basketball during those years. I saw the best of the best with 3 Final Fours during those years. And I made it through the dark ages of Rollie. Saw Vegas change from the most unique town in the country into a typical corporate city.
Wild.
I know the streak will end. After about 10 years of not missing a game, 500 was a mark I wanted to hit. Why? I'm not sure. Because it's really not important. In a way, I think the only way I could pay back for all those great early times was through loyalty. But at some point, it will stop, on my own terms. With tiny ones, something is going to "force" it at some point because I'll always yield to my children's needs. So I'd rather voluntary break it just so the obligation is no longer there. There were PLENTY of times were I didn't want to be at the Mack but felt I had to be there. I don't want that anymore.
