3-1

We actually stated 4-1 in 2003 including the win at top 25 Wisconsin. Alas, the excitement was short lived as we only were able to manage a 2-5 conference slate to finish 6-6. There weren’t as many bowl games then, so 6-6 was not good enough to go to a bowl.

Similar to 2003, We also started 3-1 in 2008 under Sanford which also included a win at top 25 Arizona St. Like, 2008 though, we then were only able to win 2 games in conference and finished 5-7.

This is the life of a UNLV football fan, unfortunately. While I think this is the most complete team we’ve had since 2000 (comparative to schedule) and the schedule is favorable, those 2 seasons still temper the excitement somewhat. Probably won’t get super excited unless we take care of business this week and are able to win against San Jose St or until we win #7.

For sure. Being a UNLV football fan, laying a big fat egg on the field next week while a large favorite at home is a very real possibility, the type of loss that takes the wind out of the sails and leads to an 0-4 or 0-5 stretch. That’s Unlv football.

But this team looks a bit different …

Good call. My bad.

Bowl eligibility is in the building… I‘m glad we will not have to settle for 4 or 5 wins this year hoping for a bowl next year!

2008 Sanford team started 3-1..Wins over ISU and a ranked Arizona State.

Speaking of Mike "I don't wear No socks to MW media days" Sanford. What ever happened to him?

CMA should be Thanking him for his exit speech that was the catalyst for the FF Complex and overall program improvements.

He's coaching Faith Lutheran HS here in Vegas.

A lot of people clowned on him at the time of the lockeroom rant.

He wasn't wrong.

I watched 5 minutes. I switched over from watching the Florida vs Tenn game. It was like switching over to watch the special Olympics after watching the real Olympics. Utah State is horrible. 3-1 is nice, usually it would take us a couple years to accumulate that many wins.

So I am thinking 7 -5 this year......

It's possible.

They have three games (UNM, UH, Reno) they will likely be favored.

SDSU looks down this year. Offense is really bad.

Fresno's QB situation makes them a little less scary.

San Jose State looks solid this year. Pretty good defensively.

Air Force is tough.

Notre Dame is down but still a talented team.

If Rebs were able to handle UNM, Reno and UH you'd have your 6.

To get to 7, would need to win one game in a tough 5 game stretch.

I'd lean towards SDSU right now..

Definitely can’t lay an egg against UNM, Hawaii and Reno. Tough thing is after New Mexico, they go through a tough 5 game stretch. Past teams would go 0-5, need to find a way to get at least 2 of those games if you want this to be true program turning season AND still have momentum going into those final 2 games.

Only game they probably won’t win is Notre Dame. The other 4 (SJSU, AFA, SDSU and FSU) are certainly winnable. How they fare in that stretch will give a true indication where they’re at exactly as a program

Me included. Seemed like yesterday that I was riding my bike with my 2 dogs and I passed by him and waved hello at him.

It was very poorly timed. Had he brought up those issues at the end of year one, it would have been better. Doing it after you’re fired sounds sour grapes.

But he was absolutely, positively spot on with what he said. There needs to be a unity, an all in from administration and everyone in the department and it has to be backed with resources. Can guarantee you smaller schools that have broken through had that - schools like TCU, Utah and Boise … they really don’t or didn’t give a shit about basketball, even though Utah made a national championship game. Basketball was window dressing. The focus was football and they had a plan and saw it through. It’s more than just the right coach. So much more. You can’t ask Picasso to make a masterpiece without a canvas and you can’t ask Musk to build a super car without any metals.

Sadly, UNLV NEVER gave attention to football - a little bit better with Robinson because of his stature … but let’s face it, the support hasn’t been strong at all. And I think it’s actually been quite similar with hoops - Tark was just able to overpower the lack of unity because he was incredibly unique. But there wasn’t strong hoop support under him. Not across the board. He built a giant in spite of, not because of and that is incredible when you think about it. I’d say the support for Lon K was similar to the support JROB got … again, I think it’s a stature thing, he was respected and things were going to be his way and UNLV delivered as much as they could. Other than that, like football, basketball hasn’t had the across the board support. A big difference is Tark built things up so well we were able to fuel things with reputation, solid success, cash flow …
