I really don't know how anyone expects any coach to pull in 4 and 5 star recruits here without some serious booster backing. It isn't even about tv exposure, the coaching staff or facilities anymore. Screw your tradition, give me my money!

A coach can only recruit as well as the booster support allows. Does anyone seriously think that Schoyer at duke can recruit as well as Coach K based on his laurels? Yet here we are with Duke remaining a recruiting powerhouse.
We arent going to out offer big P5 schools like Kansas or Duke for players.
Also for all the 4 and 5 star players weve recruited, it sure hasnt paid off in any way.. Maybe we shouldnt focus on the stars but rather how they play and just try making the tournament a few times before aiming for Final 4s by talent..

I think people are thinking of the mob days when casino owners were actual people and not corporations and they liked being attached to winners like Tark. If we're going to do anything big we better do it before whatever big boosters we have left pass away.

Maybe it's the billions of dollars of revenue rolling through the businesses in this city? Could be that.
There is money, but there still needs to be a connection to the school.
With the hospitality business being corporate owned, whose main business is getting out-of-towners to come and spend their money, not a lot of business sense to give money to a local university's sport team/program, which will likely have limited, if any tax benefits.
You don't see Microsoft giving money to UW"s NIL just because they are a big company in Seattle.
I think the smaller, more local driven casinos make more sense as potential targets.

They all use UNLV to recruit employees for management and executive positions and reap the rewards of not paying for educating them. At most they'll get a nice low-paid or unpaid internship to start. The big casino conglomerates should be pouring money into UNLV in all sorts of different ways, but they dont. Boyd & Harrah is the exception. It's not a new problem for UNLV. Those who have been around know what an absolute ahole Steve Wynn was bc he was pissed Tark was getting all the glory back in the day.
And Harrah’s, now back to the name Caesars, was acquired by a Reno-based company that moved Caesar’s HQ back to Reno and pulled out of being the prime sponsor of UNLV’s Blackfire Institute. Don't expect Caesar’s to contribute much if anything to UNLV. At best they will give negligible amounts just to cover their ass in LV since they have the second largest number of Strip properties.

UNLV has a chance to return to the Tark years. However, the ball is now made from a pig and generates more money and exposure. We watched basketball rule the roost while our football team suffered. It's time for a switch.

Not at all true with football. Maiava had a good year, especially as a freshman, with freshman mistakes.

The rest of the offense is returning and we got better at WR.. not sure how that makes us dead in the water..
he got worse as the year progressed. The holy cross guy looked good.

I don’t either. He’s not going to make the league. The football fallbacks are nothing compared to hoops. He needs to make his cash when he can.
It’s not that he’s not irreplaceable, but I’m not sold yet on the program still. We had a very weak conference this past season, schedule was kind of our friend. This year we will regress because of a harder schedule imo
Shouldn’t be sold. I have more confidence than I’ve had in over 20 years. Not because the record or relative success. They just looked like a team that was on the same page most of the time instead of just 4 minutes of game time.
I don’t think we will have a better record, no way. But I expect a forward step in what we actually see on the field.
IT all about the foundation. We are in good shape. Harder schedule. If we get 7 wins i will be happy. I think we start to separate ourselves from the weaker competition. Bigger blowouts and keep it closerish vs the more talented teams. Building a program is not easy. Football GREAT SHAPE! Basketball not so much.
The same page typically only happened vs the lower tier teams for the most part. Now I’m not saying we are not getting better as we did, I expect more pieces to be in place and not look like we are lost on D totally. If Odom stays more than 1 more year I can see the program actually turning the corner. Right now I feel like it’s fools gold with so much instability on Maryland pkwy
Aside from Michigan, who was light years ahead of us, completely expected … against the better teams on the schedule, the other team was better imo … we hung and had too long of a bad stretch during the game and it cost the Rebels.
But just in watching them … win or lose, they had a better look, a better cohesiveness. Better tackling, forced some tos, offense looked like they could score on every possession, potentially. Secondary was poor, it was gross … but across the board, take any unit, and I think they improved from the previous year. And this was with a lot of the same players as previously.
To me it really did look like they had a more focused, poised approach in every game. Never too high, never too low … they didn’t cash it in, they played through, they didn’t just play out the string of a bad game looking to get off the field. Maybe that’s just silver linings? But we haven’t even had those recently. Just crossed fingers, closed eyes and a prayer that “everything” would go UNLV’s way to compete.
That’s what I saw and I do believe it’s a full reflection of the staff. They have my confidence - until they don’t. But they earned it because I saw a stark difference in the approach and focus.
I’m not disagreeing we looked alot better and more prepared. But outside of Michigan we got handled pretty easily by Boise and Kansas as well (we should have looked the same as the last 2 and were pretty much blown out of the water). The score wasn’t a true example of the differences in levels they were above us. I think all I’m saying is before we appoint Odom as the next coming of christ, we are not out of the woods yet and year one could as easily be a fluke over the future. Clearly I’m hoping it’s the latter. But with how bad unlv is with stability it could change by end if this year either way if he bolts.
With where UNLV football has been, I’d be content with the next coming of JRob.
